25YRS LATER... S.A.S. RETURN TO BOYD's SPEEDWAY

Chattanooga, TN (1/18/2010) -- It's been 25 season since the Southern All-Star racing series have raced BOYD's SPEEDWAY. In 1984, B.J. Parker brought two events to the Tennessee-Georgia racetrack, which were both won by Mississippi racing legend and Hall of Famer Jerry Inmon. Taking victories in Columbus, MS and Talladega, AL, Inmon would win the 1984 S.A.S Championship and that would be the last time the series would sanction an event in Chattanooga. Instead for years racefans and competitors traveled up Interstate-75 to the Cleveland (TN) Speedway for S.A.S. races. In 2010 that will change... BOYD's and CLEVELAND are slated to host back to back events in March and July giving racers two chances to take home a big race payday. Friday March 12th, BOYD's SPEEDWAY will host a $4,000 to-WIN S.A.S. event prior to the annual SHAMROCK race, while July 16th will see a second $4,000 to-WIN S.A.S. event slated infront of the JEAN JOHNSON MEMORIAL at Cleveland, July 17th. The schedule page is now updated wth all 2010 events.

2009 Stuff..................................
OGLE JR. WINS BATTLE OF RINGGOLD THUNDER RACE

Chattanooga/Ringgold (10/24/09) -- And the CANON GOES TO... Billy Ogle Jr. not only grabbed the 1st ever "BATTLE OF RINGGOLD" one of a kind trophy Saturday night, but collected the $5,000 payday and possibly (we'll have to await the verdict from series President Brad Byrd) the 2009 THUNDER series championship. With under 10-laps remaining Ogle pressured race leader Ronnie Johnson enough, that one wrong move, coming outta turn two, would make the difference in the outcome of the 60-lapper. Johnson got pinned down to the bottom coming off of turn two by a back-marker machine and the two collided at the beginning of the back-stretch. Johnson would have to pit to change a shreded left rear, leaving Ogle to a 5-lap dash against Randy Weaver. Early race leader Brandon Kinzer, whom seemed to come to life just before the late caution would never be a factor in the last laps, but would finish 3rd. Rick Rogers and Tommy Kerr rounded out the Top 5.

LiL' JOHN OWENBY TAKES BOYD's CRATE 911 SALUTE

Chattanooga/Ringgold (9/11/09) -- As a rememberance to 911 BOYD's SPEEEDWAY racecars gave a 4-wide salute prior to kicking off the nights racing action. LIL' John Owenby of Cleveland, Tennessee, a former track champion of his home track, took the Crate Late Model victory passing Rex Richey on a lap 12 restart. One lap later and Owenby pulled away in Manual Mowery's # 48 "Cleveland Aluminum, Sam's Restaurant Equipment, Performance Race Engines" GRT machine leaving Richey to battle the likes of Billy Mayo, Craig Burrows and others. In the Steel-Head Late Model class Rick Hixson narrowly held off William Thomas for the victory in a SLOBBER-KNOCKER that saw Jamie Perry, Kayne Hickman and others going TOE TO TOE. Hixson gained valuable points over Mike Price whom suffered major front-end damage from a crash at the start of the feature. Larry Higgins inherited the A-Hobby victory when leader Tod Hernandez pulled up lame during the 15 lapper. Joe Johnson piloted Lee Hogan's # 14 to another B-Hobby victory. Grady Stokes won the Pony feature, while Michael Arp is back on-top in the FWD class.

CRAWLEY & LINEMAN TAKE SPRINT CAR MANIA VICTORY's

Ringgold, GA – Sept. 4, 2009 - In front of a capacity crowd Friday night, the 2008 Parts Plus United Sprint Car Series Mid-South Champion Tim Crawley from W. Memphis, Arkansas raced past rookie, Justin Carver from Drummonds, Tennessee to lead the final 7-laps of SPRINT CAR MANIA!!! at Boyd’s Speedway. The ORIGINAL OUTLAW Terry Gray from Memphis, Tennessee tried to track down Crawley in the closing laps of the race/turned crash-fest, but in the end it was all the CREEPER who'd visit JODY MILLARD PEST CONTROL Victory Lane. Carver was third with Anthony Nicholson and CJ Miller rounding out the Top 5. In the Georgia Mini Sprints feature Justin Lineman of Linwood, North Carolina took the time shortened feature race. Lineman took the lead from Dwight Pilgram whom held on to finish second. Jim Tskatos, Mike Magic and Tom Maushardt rounded out the Top 5. Lee Hogan continued his dominance in the B-Hobby, but atleast Lamar Hughes kept the pressure on for the entire 15 lapper. Jimmy Elliott won the Pony feature, his third of the season at BOYD's, beating last race winner John Smith. James Dykes finally closed Billy Bailey's winning streak in the FWD class, while Corey Cresswell inherited the A-Hobby win, after leader Larry Higgins dropped from the feature at the half-way point. Next Friday (Sept. 11th) a SALUTE to 911 is planned for all racecars at 7PM with a full racing program for all divisions.

DeWAYNE WILSON FILES A -HOBBY $500 VICTORY

Chattanooga/Ringgold (7/31/09) - - BOYD's SPEEDWAY hosted the A-Hobby MiD SuMMeR NiGHTS CHaMPioNSHiP special: Friday night and in the end it was former Cleveland Speedway Track Champion DeWayne Wilson puting his #72 "Denton's Wrecker" sponsored racecar in JODY MILLARD PEST CONTROL Victory Lane taking the $500. race. KC Graphics, Tubes & Hoses and Donnie's Auto Sales stepped up to proverbial sponsorship plate and added $600 to the A-Hobby purse, that normally pays $250 to-WIN. A special formet was set to challenge the divisional racers to more than just heat races. Arva BOOGER Brooks set fast time with a 15:349 lap and went on to win the first DASH race (from 4th) to earn the pole position for the 25-lapper and seemed to be on a CLEAN-SWEEP. Larry Higgins came to life and passed BOOGER half-way thru the "A" Main event, but then problems arose on the # 20 and Wilson inherited the lead, that he seemed, he was gonna forcefully take, if need be. Steve Tate and FRONT ROW JOE Tim Ford raced valiantly but it would be all Wilson at the conclusion.. Corey Cresswell held off a hard chargin Higgins, whom came from the rear to round out the Top 5. Current A-Hobby points leader Tod Hernandez had to rely on a back-up racecar, when he blew the # T6 during qualifying. Scotty Hogan, Gary Johnson and Jeff Paige were just ahead of the 9th finishing Hernandez with Todd Stafford rounding out the Top 10.

Jamie Perry (1999 SAS series Champion) took the lead with three (3) laps to go in the Steel-Head LM feature, beating Mike Price and Rick Hixson. Following the Top 3 across the finish line were Kayne Hickman and Andy Pickelsimer. Todd Morrow (2008 Top Tracks Champion) lead all the way in the Crate LM feature over Jerry Coffman and Jeff Smith. Smith was involved in a hurrendous flip that destroyed Craig Burrows machine in turn 4, during a heat race. Smith starting from the rear of the "A" Feature salvaged rough night, just ahead of current points leader James Gamble and Tyler Millwood. Other Winners were: Lee Hogan (B-Hobby), Grady Stokes (Pony) and Billy Bailey (FWD)....... Next weekend the KiNG of CRATE mini-series returns with ROUND # 3: The Royale Summer Slammer, with a hefty $2,000. prize going to the victory. One lap qualifying + two dashes and "B" Mains will set the 24 car starters next Friday night (Aug. 28th).

HIRED GUN GIBSON READY & GETS 'R DONE w/ CRATE WIN

Chattanooga/Ringgold (8/14/09) -- The AXE-MAN Kevin Gibson was Friday nights "HIRED GUN" at BOYD'sSPEEDWAY and got the job done in the 20 lap Crate Late Model feature. The usual "Mid Nite Oil Racing Fuel" Super Late Model dirt ace, got the opportunity to pilot the # R76 "Still Motion Photo.com, Bags N' Britches, Harrison Transmission, Southern Bullion" sponsored Pontiac Gran Prix and held off a challenge from Todd Morrow and beat David Tindell to the checkered flag for the $800 payday. The race starting line-up was altered due to penalities handed out for MOST of the field, failing to meet "starting call" for staging in the infield. Two time / back to back winner Jeff Smith didn't start, the feature that handed the FRONT ROW JOE honors to Daryl Owenbey and Gibson. Tindell kept his composure and was challenging Gibson, til 2008 Top Track Champion Morrow came rolling along. Morrow pocketed 2nd place, with two laps remaining, but had to pit under caution and disappoint his Tennessee Faithful with a 14th place finish. The divisions "3-Amigos" Jerry Coffman, Craig Burrows and points leader James Gamble rounded out the Top 5. Birthday Boy B-MAN Brian Jackson tallied a last place finish in 18th despite winning his heat race.

Rick Hixson was like a TOURNIQUET on Kayne Hickman the entire 25-laps of the Steel Head Late Model "A" Main Feature. Hickman scored the lead from 1999 Southern All-Star series champion Jamie Perry on lap 10, but Hixson main-stayed the rash of cautions, to offically take the lead on lap 18 from the H3 Performance pilot. Mike Price, who finished just behind Hickman, after a race-long battle against Rex Richey, is rite behind Hixson's # 16 "BJ's Flooring, Austin Trucking" Race Engine Design powered / MasterSbilt in the Steel-head 2009 Points chase. Perry slipped back behind Richey to round out the Top 5 finishers. Arva BOOGER Brooks won again the A-Hobby division feature. Corey Cresswell fended off points leader Tod Hernandez for second. Somehow Larry Higgins scrapped, kicked, clawed, begged, borrowed and everything else to rally from about the last row to finish 4th with Scott Boyd hanging on to finish 5th. If you've been in a coma, then you might not be able to guess who won the B-Hobby race. SWEET Lee Hogan won race # 6. The HURRICANE-RANNA finish had Jim Wallbanger 2nd, Brandon Francis 3rd with Steve King and Lebron Miller (back-trackin' it) to round out the Top 5. Jimmy Elliott WISELY paid the DOUBLE ENTRY to WIN the DOUBLE MONEY in the Pony Feature. He almost sat in the stands Friday with the family, but instead came from the back and won. Daniel Burnett was 2nd with Jon Smith, a unknown driver and Wendall Ingram rounding out the Top 5. And finally Billy Bailey made it 4-in-a-row Friday winning the FWD feature. Matt Patton and Joe Cross thought they had Bailey's number, but the T11 proved otherwise and led the last 5-laps of the race. Points leader Michael Arp was 4th with Derrick Forgey fifth.

U PDATED SCHEDULE WELCOMES SPRINT-CAR M A N I A!!!

RINGGOLD/CHATTANOOGA (August 11, 2009) - - The BOYD's SPEEDWAY in Chattanooga/Ringgold fresh off its successful Southern Regional Racing series Super Late Model event this past Friday night, has updated it's August 2009 schedule. Due to uncontrollable circumstances events have had to be pushed back a week, in order to finish up the racing program that began August 7th. The A-Hobby, Pony and FWD divisions didn't get to compete in their Feature races, due to the tracks time restraints (curfew 11:30PM), therefore DOUBLE PAY-OUT PURSE races will be contested this Friday night (Aug. 14th). The A-Hobby "MiD SuMMeR NiGHTS CHaMPioNSHiP" race is moved back to Aug. 21st which in turn moves the scheduled Crate Late Model $2,000. to-WIN "KING of CRATE CHALLENGE" race to Friday, Aug. 28th.

SPRINT-CAR MANIA has been set for September 4th, kicking off Labor Day Weekend and will welcome not only the United Sprint Car Series, but now will host a second series of the Open Wheel Outlaw style racecars; The Georgia Mini Sprints. On the undercard for that Friday night of racing action will be the A-Hobby, B-Hobby, Pony and FWD divisions. Many teams from around the region are expected to be in competition against with both series at BOYD's SPEEDWAY on the same night. In 2008, 7-Time USCS National Champion "The Original Outlaw" Terry Gray from Memphis, TN, dominated the Sprint Car event. For more information visit the tracks web-site www.boydsspeedway.com of call the track on raceday (706)891-6803. WEAVER STEALS VICTORY FROM RJ w/ LAST LAP PASS

Chattanooga, TN (8/7/09) -- In what can best be described as HORROR for HIGH 5, Ronnie Johnson (aka. the Chattanooga Flash) had Friday night's $3,000. in the bag, but a back-marker car slowed the multi-2009 BOYD's SPEEDWAY winner, just enough to allow Randy THE DREAM Weaver to capture, the last 100ft., and take the checkers in the Southern Regional Racing series MAYHEM 40 SHORTY. Using the same SUPER-SONIC high groove that catapulted Johnson to the lead on lap 13, Weaver came to life in the late stages and tracked down RJ with the final 5 laps remaining, only to lead the last and most important lap of the "A" Main feature event. "I was really driving in hard..." Weaver told S.R.R.S. announcer Gary Dearing, from Jody Millard Pest Control Victory Lane. "I could get a better bite in turn 3 & 4, but that slow car on the last lap, sealed the deal." Weaver went on to thank his crew, family and friends the help back the # 116 "Glenn's Auto Parts, Jerr-Dan, PPM Racing Products, FastLane Signs & Graphics" sponsored GRT / Race Engine Design powered Chevrolet / Corvette racecar.

At race-time forty-five Super Late Models were signed in for the scheduled 50-lapper. Due to uncontrollable circumstances S.R.R.S. and track officials decided to cut the "A" Main Feature by 10-laps and made all competitors aware of the changes. Group qualifying set the stage, locking in the two fastest from each of the four (4) groups. Johnson put his familiar/fan favorite black # 5 "Miller Bros. Construction, AFCO Racing Products, American Billett" sponsored MasterSbilt / Vinson Racing Engines powered in the fastest slot of group 1, turning a 13.571 lap. Weaver would clock second quick to RJ as group 2 took to the track. Young William Thomas would clock his #A19 "Austin Trucking, Tindall & Son's Carpet, Gene's Racing Parts"
sponsored MasterSbilt / Competition Racing with a 13:730 lap to be quickest of Group 2, with Kayne Hickman getting locked in also. In Group 3 the overall fastest qualifier would come in the form of Anthony Burroughs. The Athens, Alabama racer would clock a 13:425 with his # 121 "Barclay Auto Parts, ABC Cash Register, Stuckey Enterprise, Mississippi One Call" sponsored MasterSbilt / Wall2Wall Performance powered machine, bringing with him Lee Sutton.

Chris Ragan of Corinth, MS was overall second fastest in Group 4 turning a 13:442, earning the outside pole for the feature as Brandon Kinzer tagged along as the 2nd quick of the group. In Consi # 1: Jake Knowles plowed the road to the checkers, passing Brian Hickman around the halfway point. Mike Tinker and Jimmy Tucker also transferred. In Consi. # 2 THE DARKNESS Mike Hill took over the lead from local favorite Todd Morrow. Derrick Ellis earned the third and final transfer spot in that event. A horribly violent flip occurred, when Carnell Parker was slowing for contact, behind his racecar at the start of Consi. # 3. Parker is set to undergo neck surgery at a local Chattanooga Hospital, Sunday. Josh Putnam beat David Payne in that consi. race, with Mike Luna and David Earl Gentry transferring. The FLATROCK FLASH Robert Gant took the checkers in the 4th and final Consi. race, with Terry Jay-Bird Marlin and T.J. Alford transferring. Jay Brinkley and Tyler Landers used series provisionals to set the 23rd & 24th starting slots.

As the tracks curfew drew closer, the cars and stars of the S.R.R.S. touring group staged their respective machines. Before things offically took green from Chuck Christopher, Kayne Hickman's TENNESSEE TORNADO blew his drive-shaft from underneath the machine. That moved everybody up a on the outside line as green struck the BOYD's air. From the outside Ragan fired strong and took the lead, with Burroughs, Thomas, RJ and Weaver in-tow. Michael Luna would strike a lap 5 caution match in turn four as Knowles began taking a page from RJ and stepped to the high-side. With Johnson carrying the momentum Ragan's lead would come to an end on lap 12. RJ roared into the lead with the crowd simultaniously roaring their approval on lap 13, leaving young Knowles to battle Burroughs and Ragan. The other Hickman (Brian) ended his run, while Morrow pitted to the infield on lap 14. Lap 23 saw Ragan dominance come to an end as he lost power on the back-side while battling Burroughs and Knowles. One lap after the restart would see Knowles and Burroughs tangle under the flagstand.

Weaver and Kinzer in the #18 "Eastco Supply, Will Kinzer Foundation, Quality Oil & Gas, Kinzer Drilling Co." sponsored GRT racecar were battling for fourth when Thomas slipped up and fell outta the Top 5 for a moment. Weaver used this to his advantage and climbed the top-rope for a power maneuver. Now with Weaver in the runner-up sector it was all up to RJ. Leaving his high-side, Johnson took to the bottom of the track, allowing Weaver his opportunity for glory. Seemed time to write RJ in the "paid to" line of the big check, but place an ill-handling Tucker in the midst of the back-side and you've got the recipe for UPSET STEW. Taking it deep, Weaver edged passed Johnson, bringing the BOYD's crowd to their feet for another photo-finish, giving Weaver his second consecutive (he won the SHRINE RACE June 26th) BOYD's SLM victory. Johnson was followed by Thomas, whom scraped and clawed past Burroughs and Kinzer for third. Gant, Putnam, Ellis, Payne and series points leader Brinkley rounded out the Top 10. The series returns to BOYD's for OCTOBER-FAST excitement, for another $3,000 to-Win event, Friday, October 2nd. Lee Hogan took the B-Hobby checkers. A-Hobby, Pony and FWD will race Double Features, next Friday, Aug. 14th.

RONNIE JOHNSON PROTECTS CHATTANOOGA's BORDERS

story by: Steve Hixson

Chattanooga, TN/Ringgold, GA (7/24/09) – Since growing
up in Chattanooga, watching his father (the late Joe Lee Johnson, winner of NASCAR’s inaugural WORLD 600 in Charlotte) Ronnie Johnson has been coming to the BOYD’s SPEEDWAY for about 50 years. Friday night; fans that label him as “THE MAN, THE MYTH and THE LEGEND” totally dominated the BORDER WARS # 2 event to the tune of $2,000. The special 40-Lap Steel-Head Late Model division event drew 28 competitors at race-time, all vying for a start and all knowing with RJ in the house, they’ll likely be chasing the spoiler of the FAMOUS black # 5 “"Austin Trucking, Miller Bros. Coal, American Billett, AFCO Racing Products, VP Racing Fuel" MastersBilt / Vinson Race Engines powered racecar. Setting fast-time, winning his DASH-RACE and racing flag to flag, seems so mundane, but fans cheered him on as RJ held off challenger after challenger.

“I am so glad we had such a strong run tonight”… Johnson stated from JODY MILLARD PEST CONTROL Victory Lane. “It’s a testament to how hard my guys work back at the shop and it’s especially good when folks that back me like Wendall Vinson and his family come up from Alabama to watch me compete.” RJ expressed thanks to all the fans for coming out and to the HARVEY Bros. and their workers for refurbishing the GRANDADDY of race-tracks, in order to host such events in the Chattanooga/North Georgia area.

Johnson, 53 (years old) clocked a 14:539 lap amidst the 28 entries. Greg Husky of Knoxville in a new ride set second fastest to Johnson with a 14:566. Those two racers set the stage for two (2) DASH RACES, that saw the locked-in Top 12 race for their starting slots. Third fastest overall qualifier Mike Weeks of Friendsville, TN followed RJ to the 6-lap DASH checkers with current Steel-Head points leader Rick Hixson following. Husky meanwhile held off 1999 Southern All-Star series champion Jamie Perry for DASH #2 victory. The rest of the field was comprised of the two (2) B-Main races. Jason Welshan held off a hard chargin’ Kayne Hickman for the win. Hickman rallied from 8th to finish second, just ahead of Brian Burke. A BLAST FROM THE PAST named Rex Richey thrilled the crowd as the RED-HEADED STRANGER piloted his #87 to victory in the 2nd Last Chance race. John Parker and Lamar Scoggins, in his new GRT #32 followed Richey across the line.

With Johnson taking the Green at the OPENING BELL, action was fast, furious and bumpy for the rest of the competitors. Husky tucked into for second with the first of many cautions waving on lap 5, for a stalled Jason Cardwell. Cardwell, who was BORDER WARS #1 runner-up would end his night early with an official 22nd place finish. Early on Mike Price began charging towards the front stealing 2nd away from Husky momentarily on lap 11. Throughout the plaguing yellow-flags, Hixson began to find ground and powered by Price around the events halfway point. With Husky hanging on to a Top 5 with all he could, the MILKMAN stepped up and attempted to deliver. That would only last for Weeks until lap 27 when he pitted the unfamiliar # 31 to the infield. Perry then came to task and challenged Hixson for the #2 spot. The two tangoed around the turns and Perry came up with the spot during a lap 31 caution. The yellow was for the hardest hit of the night when Richey running just outside the Top 5 got collected with John Parker and Andy Miller on the front-stretch. Richey and Parker’s cars were destroyed in the crash, while Miller was able to continue.

Seemed Perry’s #T21 “Tinker’s Garage, Steel Detailers Int’l.” sponsored GRT entry might have something for Johnson, but that thought lasted for about three (3) laps as THE FLYIN’ WELSHAN appeared out of nowhere. With Hixson depositing his fluid all-down the front-stretch, Welshan, winner of BORDER WARS #1, gave it a go, attempting to keep pace with RJ. For the final 6-circuits the # 29 "Seiler Bros. Lumber, Welshan Excavating, The Miles 411 Restaurant, Mastercraft Boats, Caughron & Co., Tennessee RV" sponsored Trak*Star entry could only watch as Johnson led the way to the final curtain. Fourth starting Perry finished 3rd with Price lasting to 4th. Rounding out the Top 5 was 6th starting William Thomas, who’d earlier in the season fielded the very racecar from Johnson, that was carrying the MID-NITE OIL RACING FUEL
"file photo by: Laura Olmstrom"........... checkered flag. In other Racing Action; Billy Bailey made it
three-in-a-row in the FWD division. Arva BOOGER Brooks won his 5th A-Hobby race of the season and Jeff Smith collected his second consecutive Crate Late Model feature. Next Friday (July 31st) the A-Hobby $500 to-WIN “Mid SuMMeR NiGHTS CHaMPioNSHiP race. For more info, go to the tracks web-site www.boydsspeedway.com

AUSTIN TRUCKING D0UBLE TR0UBLE BATTLE HIXS0N WINs

Chattanooga, TN/Ringgold, GA (7/17/09) - Friday night few Steel-Head Late Models came ready for action, but the ones that did, served up a NON-STOP - 25 lap classic BOYD's SPEEDWAY battle, warming up for next Friday's BORDER WARS # 2, 40 lap special event. Sponsor Austin Trucking for both Rick Hixson and William Thomas (the same car driven most recently by Lamar Scoggins) had DOUBLE TROUBLE (the good kind) as both raced side-by-side for the win and the $1,000. payday. The duo set FRONT ROW JOE honors and rocketed into action of a fast and furious clay surface. With Thomas officially getting the lead for the first three (3) laps, Hixson would battle back along side, to take laps 4 - 17. Thomas peeked back into the lead on lap 18, but back-marker traffic handed the top spot back to Hixson, who kept it for the final seven (7) circuits. Behind the pair was 1999 Southern All-Star Champion Jamie Perry driving one of the TINKERS GARAGE racecars. Ruben Mayfield (unrelated to Jeremy) was fourth with Dunlap's Andy Miller finishing fifth.

A stout field of Crate Late Models took to the track for their 20 lap, $800. to-WIN feature. Jeff Smith of Villanow, GA put his "AllSouth Racing Products, Scott Gray Trucking, Millwood Plumbing, Sundial Tanning" sponsored Warrior racecar in JODY MILLARD PEST CONTROL Victory Lane. Smith headed the eighteen (18) car field, flag to flag for his first "W" of 2009 at BOYD's. James Gamble seemed to have second sewed-up, but that's why we race to the checkered flag, as Randy Hill kept the sleeper-hold applied race-long and passed Gamble on the White Flag lap. Craig Burrows finished fourth as Jerry Coffman and Danny Pippin duked it out for the 5th place. Pippin lost that battle and fell short of the checkers after racing contact, just a few feet from the start/finish line. In other Racing Action Arva BOOGER Brooks took his 4th A-Hobby victory, beating Larry Higgins and Scott Boyd. SWEET Lee Hogan took the B-Hobby SHOCKER… The shock was 14 entrants, while Billy Bailey and Grady Stokes were back holding the MID-NITE OIL RACING FUELS Checkered Flag winning their respective FWD and Pony features. YOUNG-GUN RODABAUGH WINS FIRST PONY RACE at 14yo.

Chattanooga/Ringgold (7/10/09) - - In a article normally set aside for the top producing Late Models and Crates, young fourteen (14yo.) Jordan Rodabaugh of Cleveland, Tennessee won his first Pony Stock feature race Friday night at BOYD's SPEEDWAY. The kid was hounded lap after lap side-by-side for the latter part of 20 laps by veteran Pony racer Grady Stokes, a multi division winner and current points leader. Congrats to the # 66 "AllSouth Racing Products, MAXI Service Centers" raceteam. Many Steel-Head LM's entered BOYD's Friday obtaining valuable "seat-time" for the upcoming BORDER WARS race in two-weeks. Coming into the event, no racer has been able to produce multiple wins, during the points season and Brad Lowe did everything he could to become the divisions 7th different winner. Lamar Scoggins had other intentions as the Cleveland, TN veteran pocketed the $1,000. payday, winning flag to flag the 25 lap "A" Main Feature. Todd Morrow, with visions of $25,000. still dancing in his head, won the 20 lap $800 to-WIN Crate Late Model "A" Main Feature race. The A-Hobby again saw Tod Hernandez hand everybody their hat at the gate... The current points leader, even survived another post-race protest. A-Hobby are looking ahead to a BIG EVENT in a few weeks, where all entrants will receive a single lap of qualifying before their 25 lap MID-SUMMER NIGHTS Championship feature, July 31st. Lee Hogan won the B-Hobby feature and Billy Bailey got outta the "BRIDES-MAID" column (5 runner-up finishes) and got his first FWD feature of the points season.

Twenty-two (22) Steel-Head LM's signed in for action, showing six (6) different winners of six (6) points events thus-far this season. In Heat # 1 Lamar Scoggins put his # A19 "Austin Trucking, L&S Motors, Covebase LLC, Competition Racing Equipment" machine on the pole, winning the 8-lapper. Brad Lowe of Knoxville, TN came from sixth to take the second spot with Jason Cardwell (in a new ride) finishing third. Heat # 2 "THE FLYIN' WELSHAN Jason Welshan of Maryville, TN took the checkers, with Mike Price finishing second. Jamie Perry (driving one of the Tinker's racecars) finished third. With the wave of the green-flag the field roared to life with Scoggins and Welshan racing side-by-side. Jeff Franklin got tangled up twice and was one of the first racecars out of action.
Rick Hixson was third making advancements late in the going from his 8th starting spot. Outside pole sitter Welshan was 4th with "BP" Brian Pritchard rounding out the Top 5. Todd Morrow lead from the pole start to finish in the Crate LM "A" Main feature. The # T16 "Hunt Trucking, Choo Choo Materials" sponsored Race Engine Design powered survived a gaggle of yellow flags during the event.
Behind points leader James Gamble in second was Jeff Smith, Daryl Owenbey and Chris Barnett. Tod Hernandez took the A-Hobby division by storm and ended Arva BOOGER Brooks' win streak at two. Brooks would hold off Corey Cresswell for second with Arva DADDY Brooks finishing fourth and Larry Higgins surviving an early crash for fifth overall. Behind Lee Hogan in the B-Hobby race was Lebron Miller, Ronnie Brooks, Floyd Brooks Jr. and Alvin Sewell. Following Rodabaugh and Stokes under the checkers of the Pony race wasRalph Langston, Rocky McNabb and Wendall Ingram respectfully.

WEAVERS INHERITS SHRINERS $3,000 GIFT AT BOYD’s
A THUNDER-OUS T.K.O.

Ringgold, GA/Chattanooga, TN (6/26/09) – In the end, the decision went to Randy THE DREAM Weaver… TheBOYD’s SPEEDWAY crowd cheered and jeered as Weaver parked the Bob Harris owned # B1 “Preferred Sandblasting & Painting, Dynam, 5150 Race Trailers” sponsored GRT / Vic Hill Racing Engines powered machine in Jody Millard Pest Control Victory Lane for Round 8 of the Tennessee THUNDER series 2009 schedule. Witnessing a battle like no-other Friday night, the $3,000. payday went back to Crossville, Tennessee after Weaver inherited the lead for the second time during the SHRINERS RACE, this time with sixteen (16) remaining of the 50-lapper. Fast qualifier Billy Ogle Jr. who‘s vastly becoming a favorite at and of BOYD’s, seemed he would again be the man to beat. But losing a tire on lap 26 would remove Ogle from back-to-back BOYD’s/THUNDER wins giving the lead to Weaver. Racing Tommy Kerr side-by-side for the lead, nobody saw Mike Marlar come into frame, as the 22nd starter rocketed past both on the back-side for top spot. The TKO was delivered quickly as Kerr laid the SMACKDOWN on Marlar from behind in turn three. Thus Weaver again becoming inherent of the top spot, which he kept for the remainder of the event.

After setting PRECISION PRODUCTS INC., Fast Time in qualifying with a 14:129 second lap, Ogle went on to claim the 1st of two SUNOCO Quick6 DASHES, earning another $100 bonus from FISHER PAINT & BODY. Stacy Boles of Knoxville, was 2nd quick a whole 4-tenths of a second slower than Ogle. Kerr, Ronnie Johnson and Joe Armes were the Top 5 fastest. Others locked-in on their times included; Jamie Perry, Mark Vineyard, Derek Ellis (who-won the second dash, when Boles spun solo in turn four), Kevin Gibson, Cody Barnett, David McCoy and Weaver. Two “B” Main Last Chance races set the remaining field with Robert Gant and Jake Knowles taking the honors. Ronnie Johnson was unable to make the DASH race and had to borrow Mike Tinkers (# T22) to join the field for the feature. Provisionals went to Doug Smith, Marlar (whom kept having fan-belt issues during qualifying and b-mains), Shon Flannery and Todd Morrow. The SHRINERS put in a 25th starter voted on by fans and it’s members in attendance. Crossville TN’s Brett Wyatt got that nod.

With the distinctive RED-FEZ waving the green flag over the 25 starters, Ogle took his proverbial place, out front, being trailed again by the ROCKET-BOY. It seemed a quicky might be in the books as 10 then 15 circuits rattled off before Lee Sutton would rear caution # 1. From then on the gloves were off behind the leader as Kerr and Weaver danced side-by-side for the runner-up take. Former Southern All-Star series champion Jamie Perry’s night and Top 10 run came to an end on lap 17 as the Hickman’s (cousins Brian and Kayne) were feasting on a David Payne MURPHY MAFIA BURGER. Shocked n’ Aww’d the crowd witnessed Ogle’s demise as the RR tire launched off the racecar and over the turn-3 billboards of lap 26. With the DREAM now in command Kerr began to salivate at his probability of winning his seasons first and the two again drew door-to-door. Making his BOYD’s SPEEDWAY debut the WINFIELD WARRIOR quietly basked within the Top 5, until the COBRA-KAI Marlar struck with one swipe taking the lead, down the back-stretch. The result was a THUNDEROUS applause by the crowd, though short-lived as Kerr never lifted dive-bombing the former HILL-BILLY 100 champion.

The PUNT HEARD ROUND THE WORLD, would send Tennessee THUNDER series officials into a huddle, and would eventually send both drivers to the tail of the lead lap. The NO-FAULT rule for Marlar and the rough driving penalty for Kerr would be handed-out by series President Brad Byrd. Marlar disgusted headed to the pits, as Kerr went back to about 10th. Kerr would feel the WRATH of PAYNE as the two mixed it up off of turn two, racing for position. Luckily for Kerr track officials negated an on-track confrontation and set the two apart for the restart. Anthony White driving a blue/red # 2X “Stone Plus, Freddy White Masonry, White’s Total Performance, David’s Auto Parts” DWB / Vic Hill powered racecar and coming from 20th tried keeping the pressure on Weaver, but it was too little too late and would be the SHRINERS runner-up. Vineyard in one of his best runs of 2009 was third in his # 4 “Smithbilt Inc., 441 Market” DWB / Custom Race Engines machine holding off local young-gun Barnett and recent JUVENILE DIABETES big winner Knowles. Payne would get 6th with Gibson, Kerr, McCoy and outside FRONT ROW JOE starter Ellis rounding out the Top 10 officially.

RJ TAKES PRICE DOWN… WITH TEAM-MATE THOMAS TAKING BOYD's CRATE

Chattanooga, TN / Ringgold, GA (6/19/09) - Proverbial Round#2 of the battle between Ronnie Johnson and Mike Price took place Friday night at BOYD's SPEEDWAY on the Tennessee/Georgia state-line. The CHATTANOOGA FLASH did what was expected and raced from his 4th place starting position in the 25-lap Steel-Head Late Model feature to victory passing not only Rick Hixson but battling it out with Mike Price, with whom he recently lost a race (by mere inches), for the $1,000 payday. Johnson's new team-mate William Thomas with a "Austin Trucking, Miller Bros. Coal, American Billett, AFCO Racing Products, VP Racing Fuel, Kinser Air Filters" MastersBilt / Race Engine Design Crate motored (Johnson's Steel-Head motor is Vinson Race Engines) powered racecar took the 20-lap Crate feature and seems to be enjoying his Chattanooga home-away from home and the Boyd's track.

Heat races topped the order of action early Friday as 15-Steel-Heads and 17-Crate's signed in on the sweltering afternoon. Price held off Mark Rosner in heat # 1 for the Steel-Head LM's with Hixson keeping RJ at bay for the outside FRONT ROW JOE honors of the feature. With Johnson battling off Hixson at the start of the feature, Price had his hands full of the track favorite by lap 5. Swapping the lead for the next three circuits RJ took command with the winning pass on lap 8. Price wasn't so lucky to hold on, rearing a late caution. Hixson had no problem holding off Greg Husky, while the ROZ handled 4th place. Andy Miller got his second Top 5 appearance of the season at BOYD's with his 5th place finish. Starting from the outside pole Thomas, in one of RJ's chassis' held off former ICE BOWL champ Bobby Mayse early and held-off Jeff Smith and a hard chargin Jerry Coffman at the end of the Crate LM feature. Finishing just
behind Mayse was current Crate points leader James Gamble in 5th.

In other Racing Action: Arva BOOGER Brooks kept the petal to the metal in the A-Hobby division holding off Larry Higgins and Tod Hernandez single-handedly. Scott Boyd and Dustin Cansler rounded out the Top 5 in the 15-lapper. SWEET Lee Hogan dominated the B-Hobby by half-a-track… Where's VEGA and the BIG SHOW when we need them? Alvin Sewell, Brandon Francis, fan favorite Tim Totherow and Adam Earwood finished 2nd thru 5th. BADD Brad Pressley (not related to MY NAME IS EARL star Jaime Pressley) of Knoxville debuted BOYD's SPEEDWAY and took the Pony feature. Jordan Rodabaugh, Ralph Langston, Corey Green and fellow K-TOWN CLAN member Allen Holloway all chased Pressley to the checkers. And in the FWD division the K88-fraction took dominance over a HUGE field. Michael Arp was again victorious and continues to pad his points lead. Billy Bailey, Joe Cross, Matt Patton and Steve Boyd rounded out the Top 5 on the final race of the evening. Next Friday as the TN THUNDER series invades for the SHRINERS RACE, the Crate LM's, A-Hobby and FWD will be on the undercard.

RONNIE JOHNSON CROWNED BOYD's KING of CRATE # 2

Chattanooga, TN / Ringgold, GA (6/5/09) - The CHATTANOOGA FLASH Ronnie Johnson topped a stout field of Crate Late Models for the second of four KING of CRATE Challenge (THE JUNE JESTER) races Friday night at BOYD's SPEEDWAY. A field of thirty-one (31) Crate Late Models attempted to make the field for the $2,000. payday, but local-faithful racefans and competitors alike knew what to expect when the red n' black # 5 "Austin Trucking, Miller Bros. Coal, American Billett" racecar staged on the outside of row three for the 40-lap "A" Main feature. "I like being able to race this close to home, BOYD's has always been special to me. I remember wishing the rain away on Fridays as a school-boy so I could go watch my dad (the late Joe Lee Johnson) race out here back when it was a paved track." RJ concluded his victory lane celebration, thanking all the racefans, who've been like family to him for so many years. Lamar Scoggins won the Steel-Head LM feature in a photo-finish style over Rick Hixson. The pair battled lap after lap, side-by-side for 23 laps, without a caution. Corey Cresswell nabbed his first A-Hobby feature, while Michael Arp won the FWD division race.

Qualifing locked-in the top-12 as neighboring NORTH GEORGIA SPEEDWAY ponied up a $100 to the events fastest on the clock, promoting their upcoming LUCAS OIL series race in nearby Dalton, GA. Phenix City, Alabama's William Thomas rocked around the clock, with a tune of 14:506 seconds and would pocket the bonus cash. Setting up two DASHES for the quick 12, CHAT-TOWN RADIATOR and PAUL's USED AUTO & TRUCK PARTS sponsored a pair of quik-6 races. The out-side front row was the place to be as Royce Bray (3rd fastest) and Brian Burke (4th fastest) took the wins from Thomas and second fast qualifier Blake Stewart. The two B-Mains were topped by Craig Burrows in the # 23 "Tony Burrows Construction, Dale McDowell Racing" racecar and former ICE BOWL champ Bobby Mayse. The remainder of the 24-car field were finishers 2nd - 6th respectfully, which included a rare back-in-the-pack appearance by current BOYD's SPEEDWAY Crate LM points leader James Gamble, who narrowly transferred.

As Bray and Burke set the field to green, it appeared as though the # 21 "Dave Gordon Auto Supply" 2008 FASTRAK $50,000. National Champion would debut BOYD's SPEEDWAY to the tune of $2,000. Burke would keep pace with Bray for the first seven circles, but it was RJ's quick work of Thomas' # 16 "Austin Trucking, BJ's Flooring" machine that all eye's were upon, back in third. As Burke faded, LIL' John Owenby kept the pedal mashed, but Burrows was on the hunt from his 13th starting spot. By the halfway point Burrows had disposed of Burke and was ridin' with Stewart's #M1 "Cleveland Speedway Driving School, CarSmart Auto Sales" racecar on his coat-tails/spoiler. Brad Hall ended his BOYD's SPEEDWAY debut early and was first car out with Chad Smith and Allen Green following suit soon enough. Brian Pritchard also called it early with an ill-handling racecar.

With pressure only few can bring, RJ trailed Bray lap after lap, stalking his prey like BUNGLE in the JUNGLE, looking to sweep away the high-prize. On lap 25 Bray's door was opened too long and the two-time Dirt Track World Champion stepped on-through. In traffic Johnson inadvertently punted Mike Head to rear a yellow, which gave him a clear track on the restart with 15 or so remaining. "I was trying to give him room, but I just wasn't that quick." stated the HEADMAN after the race, concerning his eye-catching 360 on the front-straightaway. Spread out with less than ten to go, Aaron Ridley had his hands full of the DIRTY WHITE BOY and Jody Summerville. As the checkers waved for RJ, Ridley lead the second group of five. Behind RJ, Bray, Thomas, Burrows and the M1 TANK. Finishing behind Ridley, was Anthony White and the former NATIONAL 100 champion with Jeff Smith (of Villanow, GA) and outside pole sitter Burke. Racing resumes in two weeks at BOYD's SPEEDWAY (June 19th) with a Full Racing Program in all 6-classes.

Chattanooga, TN/Ringgold, GA (5/29/09) – For the unprecedented 3RD
time this season, BOYD’s SPEEDWAY has produced a Photo-Finish at the conclusion of it’s top seeded Late Model feature event. Friday night Lenior City, Tennessee’s Mike Price held on by mere inches at the finishline, holding off last starting two-time Dirt Track World Champion Ronnie Johnson. Twenty-nine (29) Steel-Head Late Models entered the tracks regular $1,000. to-WIN 25 lapper and at the conclusion, Price’s # 77 “GP Painting, Total Fitness Personal Training, CVR Bodies” sponsored Stinger / Competition Racing Engines powered was freshly funked in JODY MILLARD PEST CONTROL Victory Lane. “Man, I sure am glad that one wasn’t 26 laps” stated the victor after the race. “RJ had us… We really love coming here, this place is awesome.”

Arriving late, per the norm, if you know anything about THE CHATTANOOGA FLASH, put Johnson in the final starting position for the feature race. RJ and Price finished side-by-side at the line. “…if that finish-line would’ve been a few more feet down the front-stretch – I’d got him.” stated Johnson after the races were over. In the WARM-UP race for next weekends KING of CRATE CHALLENGE event, the # M1 TANK of Blake Stewart repeated last Friday’s performance, holding off Jody Summerville and Jerry Coffman for the Crate LM $800 victory. Stewart driving the "Car Smart Auto Sales, McMahan Drilling & Blasting, Cleveland Speedway Driving School, Servall Plumbing, CASH Store" sponsored TNT / Race Engine Design powered is the first racer to wintwice in the 2009 Points season. SWEET Lee Hogan laid claim to the B-HOBBY double payout victory, as Arva BOOGER Brooks held off Tod Hernandez for the A-Hobby double payday. Next Friday, June 5th; the KING of CRATE “JUNE JESTER” pays $2,000. to-WIN.

THAT's MY BOY… BILL ELLIOTT's 14YO. SON AT BOYD's

story by: Steve Hixson
photo's by: Thomas Hendrickson (www.DT52PHOTOS.com)

Chattanooga, TN/Ringgold, GA (5/23/09) - NASCAR icon and racing legend Bill Elliott was on hand Friday night at BOYD's SPEEDWAY not suited up for racing action, but taking on a more important role… one of dear ole dad. Bill and wife Cindy rolled into the pits early Friday afternoon and began unloading their 14 year-old sons Crate Late Model, in preparation for the nights 20 lap "A" Main feature, that saw more than a full field of twenty-four 24 entrants. Just as much of a stir of NASCAR faithful, politely requesting autographs, the main-stay of teenage girls around the track were giddy with just the possibility of getting a glimpse of the pint-sized second generation soon-to-be Superstar. With the poise of his father, the middle-schooler met with many people in the pits, as they readied the solid white # 9 "Aaron's Sales & Lease, Dawsonville Pool Room, Georgia Racing Hall of Fame" racecar for competition.

Despite drawing for the inside Row 2 starting position of his heat race, Elliott elected to start in the rear in order to stay out of trouble and get a feel for the racecar. He'd already logged important testing laps just days before, in a private testing session, but on this day the track was "heavy" and fast, instead of dry and slick. In the feature he lined-up along side, one of last weeks top-continders Josh Collins in the 18th starting spot and the two set a trail towards the Top 5. As the checkers flew Elliott would end up 7th, advancing 10 positions. Chase is running many events this season and just 2-weeks ago picked up his first Pro Late Model feature at Lanier National Speedway in Georgia. More information on Chase can be obtained on his fathers web-site www.billelliottracing.com.

BILLY THE KID RIDES AGAIN…
OGLE JR. WINS BOYD’s THUNDER GEORGIA MEMORIAL

story by: Steve Hixson

Chattanooga, TN/Ringgold, GA (5/22/09) – Current TENNESSEE THUNDER series points leader Billy Ogle Jr. (known for over 20yrs as BILLY THE KID) a second generation racer who’s surpassed his fathers East TN racing hey-day, rode into BOYD’s SPEEDWAY and stole the THUNDER Friday night of the GEORGIA MEMORIAL RACE at the Tennessee/Georgia stateline bordered dirt track. Against thirty-one (31) other competitors and an unforgiving surface Ogle and ROCKETBOY Tommy Kerr battled epically for the $4,000. payday of the 50 lap “A” Main Feature race. “Last year was a re-build season and I just wanna say a special thanks to my crew and owners.” Stated Ogle from JODY MILLARD PEST CONTROL Victory Lane. “It feels good to get a win, being as hard as this teams worked and these AMERICAN RACER TIRES were awesome” Ogle continued his celebration with series director Brad Byrd stating how the bottom was coming to him, but he had to be patient, especially on that last caution. Kerr would finish second, with Robert Gant coming from 20th would finish third.

PRECISION PRODUCTS INC. Qualifying Time Trials set the stage for the Super Late Models first-up. Ogle drew the #1 pill and tripped the clock with a 13:320, which set a NEW TRACK RECORD. The James Kilby owned # 201 “Calhoun’s Restaurant, Grandy King Construction, Kilby’s Equipment Sales, Mike Kittrell Motorsports” sponsored GRT / Competition Racing Engines powered, Pontiac Gran Prix would not be bested and would earn the bonus $100. from PPIPARTS.com. Recent TTDCS winner Ricky Arms would get closest to Ogle, with a 13:593, with Kayne Hickman leading the local racer charge, clocking third quick, with a 13:637 mark. Tommy Kerr whom held the track record, coming into the event, qualified fourth and Randy THE DREAM Weaver rounded out the Top 5 fastest. The Top 12 qualifiers were locked into the two SUNOCO DASHES; which were won by Ogle and Arms, to earn FRONT ROW JOE starting grid honors for the feature. Two WEST HAVEN SPEED EQUIPMENT “B” Mains transferred the rest of the field. Mike Hill and Jake Knowles won those races respectfully.

Ogle and Arms brought the BOYD’s crowd to their feet as they took the green flag from flagman ChuckChristopher. With Ogle leading, Jeff Neubert exited first as Arms battles Kerr for second. Back-marker traffic came into play quickly before caution appears for the first time on lap 5, as Todd Morrow stalled in turn 4. Brian Hickman, Knowles and Mike Weeks were all infield bound, not able or willing to continue. The restart had Ogle leading Arms, Kerr, K. Hickman and Ronnie Johnson for the next five circuits, until Joe Armes shreded his left rear tire to rear a yellow flag. K. Hickman and RJ advanced as Arms wained backwards giving Weaver his entry into the Top 5. ROCKETBOY took advantage on the restart and passed Ogle for the lead on lap 12. To the delight of his crowd, the CHATTANOOGA FLASH took third, but a puff of smoke billowed from underneath the hood of the racecar and Johnson quickly shuts-it-down. A barrage of cautions plague the race that see Hill spin, Billy Mayo stall, and Dan Tipton all have woes, all coming before the half-way point.

All seemed well for the # 4T “Blount Excavating, Explosive Specialist, Arnold Trucking” sponsored Rocket / Custom Race Engines, Chevrolet Monte Carlo who's leading the field, as Ogle continues to bottom-feed in second place. The events biggest caution hits when Dan Tipton collects DOUBLE H BUMPER award recipient David Payne, Mayo and Jamie Perry. K. Hickman seems to be the races dark-horse in third as Kevin Gibson enters the equation. Unfortunately neither would see the 3/5th’s mark and exit quietly to the full infield. The FLATROCK FLASH Robert Gant is piloting his # 22 “White’s Logging, Carl Gregory Ford” sponsored MastersBilt / Cornett powered Ford Taurus now within the Top 5 late in the going, as Kerr and Ogle rage on. Gant would obtain the Hard Charger nod at the conclusion after starting 20th. Derek Ellis in the # 99 “Ellis Contracting, AutoZone, Wilson Welding, Gene’s Racing Parts” sponsored Rayburn / Racetek, Chevrolet Impalla SS has kept Gant within his sights while Kerr and Ogle lap the remaining racers.

Ogle has kept the pressure, keen on the bottom of the track and with assistance from key back-markers and surface conditions, Kerr relinquishes the lead for good on lap 37. Attrition whittles the field to only 8 racecars as the FAT-LADY began tuning up for Ogle. HIXSON DOUBLES DOWN AT BOYD's: THOMAS WINS TOO
RAINS HIT LATE FORCE PONY's & FWD's TO WAIT

pics by: Laura Olmstrom (www.actionshotsetc.com)

Chattanooga, TN/Ringgold, GA (5/15/09) - Over 120 raceteams from around the region came to beat Mother-nature and each other Friday night at BOYD's SPEEDWAY in Chattanooga/Ringgold. For most of the season veteran Tennessee racer Rick Hixson has been the man to beat and Friday night the TROJAN from Soddy Daisy DOUBLED DOWN when he inherited the Steel-Head Late Model feature just prior to witnessing his HIRED GUN William Thomas race to victory. A pair of # 16 "Austin Trucking, BJ's Flooring, Gene's Racing Parts" sponsored MasterSbilt / Race Engine Design racecars made it to Jody Millard Pest Control Victory Lane with Thomas taking the 20 lap, Crate LM feature and Hixson winning the 25 lap controversial Steel-head LM race. Rains sprinkled the race track just prior to hot laps, putting about an hour delay on the start-time, forcing GM Gar Dickson to make adjustments to the race format, due to the tracks 11:30PM curfew. With four of the six divisions completed, Mother-nature had seen enough racing and uncorked while the Pony division was on the track.

With two consecutive weeks of rain-outs in the area, many racers invaded the track looking for action. Twenty-two (22) Steel-Head racers signed in for battle, setting up two HIGH IMPACT heat races to determine the starting grid for the "A" Main Feature. Mike Price of Lenior City, TN set out from his outside FRONT ROW JOE honors and defeated TENNESSEE POWER HOUSE DUO of Riley Hickman and Bobby Mayse. Hixson, would finish a dismal fourth with Lamar Scoggins debuting at BOYD's in fifth. The WIZARD OF ROZ, Mark Rosner would dominate heat # 2. Rosner handed pole sitter Jeff Franklin the defeat, coming from fourth to win the outside pole honors. Behind Franklin was Grag Husky, Davy Davis and Ty McGee. With THUNDER RUMBLING (hence the PUN for next Friday's TENNESSEE THUNDER series race) and LIGHTNING FLASHING, Price jumped out into the lead at the green-flag. Hixson back in the pack stacked a crash on the opening circuit and damaged his machine, but was able to continue to re-start with the field. Franklin and Allen Jolly weren't so lucky as they ended their nights early, along with Andy Pickelsimer.

Seemed the PRICE WAS RIGHT as firm control was in the hands of the Lenior City, Tennessee Orange racer, despite numerous caution flags slowing the action. Scoggins, Husky and BORDER WARS dominator Jason Cardwell were all battling with Hixson behind ROZ and Price. On a restart Price failed to fire at the turn-four line and Rosner took the lead, in what looked like to most a jumped start. Flagman Chuck Christopher made the correct call and allowed the restart to unfold. A few laps later and it was Price tangling with Rosner, which would hand the lead over to Hixson, due to a flat tire on ROZ's machine. Price was regulated to the rear and would chase the final laps back to an 8th place run. Hixson was followed across the finishline by Mayse, Scoggins, Husky and Cardwell. In the Crate LM feature Hixson tapped again 2007 FASTRAK $50,000, Points Champion William Thomas of Phenix City, Alabama to pilot his racecar. Thomas won from his outside pole position, the 20 lap race over polesitter Josh Collins, James Gamble, Danny Pippin and Hixson's third car-owner entry Jerry Coffman. In Heat action BOYD's BLAST winner Billy Mayo raced with Bonnie Gullet but would spin-out early in the feature, that saw similar productions from Todd Morrow, Brian Pritchard and Blake Stewart and Kayne Hickman.

In other racing action; Tod Hernandez inherited victory after being passed by back-to-back winner Larry Higgins. Dewayne Wilson was the runner-up, with Gary Johnson, Jeff Paige, and Tim Ford rounding out the Top 5 finishers. In the B-Hobby a stout field of fourteen (14) competitors raced their 15 lap feature. Lee Hogan chased and chased Jimmy Smith but VEGA wouldn't be denied as the # 88 debuted outta the box with the victory. Brian Smith finished a solid third, with Duke Rodabaugh and Jacob Stewart rounding out the Top 5. Next Friday night the TENNESSEE THUNDER series Super Late Models invade BOYD's SPEEDWAY for the $4,000. to-WIN - GEORGIA MEMORIAL RACE. Many Steel-head LM racers are expected to take on the traveling touring group racers. For this special event racers CAN compete in both the Crate LM race as well as the SLM - TENNESSEE THUNDER race. Plus, the PONY & FWD divisions will be competing for DOUBLE PURSE MONEY, due to the rain-out this Friday. A-Hobby and B-Hobby will also be competing Friday, May 22nd. Races get underway at 7PM EST. PHOTO FINISH AGAIN BORDER WARS TO JASON WELSHAN
STEEL-HEAD RACE BY A MERE INCHES AT CHECKERS
story by: Steve Hixson

Ringgold, GA (4/24/09) - Nobody would have thought a better ending could come after last weekends KING ofCRATE race last lap pass for victory. Friday night, the STEEL-HEAD BORDER WARS race at Boyd's Speedway came down to inches at the flagstand, producing some post-race drama for all involved. Jason Cardwell of Knoxville, TN lead 39 and 7/8's of a lap, of the 40 lap, $2,000. to-WIN feature. Even the scoring tower wasn't sure which racecar crossed the finishline first. Thanks to photographer Nick Nicholson and owner/promoter Richard Harvey the original call from the scoring-tower (in favor of Cardwell) was reversed and correct credit was given to Jason Welshan. The Maryville, Tennessee racer set fast time over the thirty-two (32) car field, being the only racer to break the 15second mark during single lap qualifying. An inverted DASH RACE set the Top 8 for their feature starting position and Welshan would finish 5th after starting last. Passing pole sitter, Mark Leach and inheriting second from Bobby Mayse, Welshan would hold off late race SMACKDOWN by Brad Lowe, before edging Cardwell for a 1-2-3 East Tennessee BORDER WAR victory. Of the entries only eight (8) racers were from Georgia, giving dominance of the Top 10 finishers from Tennessee.

Piloting the # 29 "Seiler Bros. Lumber, Welshan Excavating, The Miles 411 Restaurant, Mastercraft Boats, Caughron & Co., Tennessee RV" sponsored Trak*Star / Nick's Race Engines racecar, Welshan clocked a 14:919 to be locked into the FAST DASH - 12 lap race. The inverted field was won by 8th qualifier Leach, whom along with Cardwell, took FRONT ROW JOE honors for the BORDER WARS main event. Two "B" Main last chance races made up the remainder of the twenty-four (24) car starting grid. Brandon Williams won the first consi., with Charles Hurst and Brian Pritchard finishing second and third. In consi. # 2 it was Rick Hixson dominating, with Chip Brindle and Ruben Mayfield following. A four (4) wide salute set the battle-flag to green as Cardwell overpowered Leach and Mayse at the start. Kayne Hickman briefly battled Welshan and Mark Rosner and would be the war's first casualty of the event. Just outside the Top 5 the two top producing racers of the 2009 Boyd's Speedway season; Rosner and Hixson seemed complaisant, as Welshan began to petal towards Mayse in the runner-up spot. Lowe would trail Leach early, as it seemed Mayse had something for Cardwell.

Pre-halfway point exits from Andy Miller, Shannon Bearden, Brindle and others whittled the field down, as Mayse began pressuring Cardwell for the lead. Then it was all over for the 2007 ICE BOWL CHAMP. Mayse hit a hard knock in turn 4, on the 25th circuit and ended his run stalling towards turn 1. This moved everybody up a notch behind Cardwell with Welshan in the runner-up spot. Eleven laps later and Scott Jackson laid some oil down on the low-line to rear the events final caution and set-up probably the tracks closest finish in its long-storied history. Welshan and 3rd running Lowe got a good restart and raced side-by-side into turns 1 & 2. On lap 37 the duo tangled and allowed Cardwell a cars-length of breathing room. Somehow Weshan and Lowe switch lines and Welshan finds some traction on the outside. As the white flag flies from Chuck Christopher, Welshan is at Cardwell's quarter-panel. Drawing along side Jason vs. Jason draws to the checkered flag and Welshan literally by 6inches (or less) noises Cardwell for the $2,000. payday. While at the infield scale-house Welshan is weighed twice and given the "all-clear" as it's announced the # 07 "Competition Racing Equipment, B&M Concrete" sponsored Stinger / Jim Ford Automotive powered racecar of Cardwell is the winner.

A hasty infield conference ensues with track owner Richard Harvey, who personally witnessed the photo-finish, thus ordering a corrected reversal. "That would've been a $2,000. mistake and I wasn't gonna stand by that." stated Harvey, whom double-checked his own account, with a shot from track photographer Nick Nicholson, whom was stationed a few yards away from the flagstand. "What a RACE!!!" claimed Welshan, after climbing from the racecar in JODY MILLARD PEST CONTROL Victory Lane. "I already had in my mind, what 2nd place was going to pay. You just can't give up at this place. Jason (Cardwell) drove a heck-o-va race and I wanna thank all the fans for coming out tonight." Welshan concluded in victory lane thanking everyone whom helped out in his crew, family and circle of friends. The # 16L "Lowe's Auto Parts, Cross Creek Stables, Rick's handy Man Service, Quality Lawn Care, Burnett's Auto Repair" sponsored Trak*Star / B&B powered racecar of Lowe finished a close 3rd. Eleventh starting Hurst and polesitter Leach rounded out the Top 5. Rosner and Pritchard headed up the second setted Top 5 in 6th and 7th, with Hixson, Robert Stutts and Ty McGee rounding out the Top 10 officially.

In other racing action the A-Hobby finally saw a new winner. Last weeks runner up Larry Higgins kept last weeks winner and early season dominator Tod Hernandez behind him in the 15 lap feature. Early leader Dewayne Wilson and a front running Scott Boyd fell from competition early. Arva DADDY Brooks finished 3rd, with Len McNeese and Todd Stafford rounding out the Top 5. In the Crate Late Model division James Gamble took some much needed retribution after last weekends KING of CRATE loss. The B-MAN Brian Jackson was 2nd of the 21-car field, with Craig Burrows finishing 3rd. Chad Smith and Danny Pippin rounded out the Top 5. In the final feature of the evening Wendall Ingram defeated Grady Stokes and Jimmy Elliott in the Pony Stock race. Randy Stanfield and young Jordan Rodabaugh finished 4th and 5th. Next Friday night, May 1st the Super Late Model's return; when the SRRS tour racers invade BOYD's SPEEDWAY for the $3,000. to-WIN "MAYHEM 50". All classes (except the STEEL-HEAD LM's) will be in competition with Crate Late Models topping the undercard, with their $800. to-WIN regular racing feature. A-Hobby, B-Hobby, Pony and FWD will all compete for 2009 points. Information can be obtained at the web-site www.boydsspeedway.com or on-line with the SRRS web-site at www.southernregionalracingseries.com.

RICK HIXSON TAKES GAMBLE WINS BOYD's KING OF CRATE
LAST LAP PASS SUCCESSFUL - MAYO FROM 10th TAKES 2nd - GAMBLE LOSES BIG

Ringgold, GA (4/17/09) - When the money's on the line, veteran Tennessee racer Rick Hixson seems to betheman to beat at BOYD's SPEEDWAY. Friday night the CABIN FEVER Champion backed up his big event victory from March, with a $2,500. last lap GAMBLE to take the KING of CRATE CHALLENGE victory. The TROJAN from Soddy Daisy started from the outside of row two and quickly went to work on race leader James Gamble. Billy Mayo sliced and diced his way from his 10th starting spot to third, by the halfway point and worked by Hixson as the two-to-go signal was given. "I was creeping up ever so lightly", stated Hixson from victory lane, who made the command decision to put the # 16 "Austin Trucking, BJ's Flooring, Gene's Racing Parts" sponsored MasterSbilt / 604 GM powered - Race Engine Design on the high-line for the final two circuits. "Billy (Mayo) flat had me on the bottom and would've gotten this race, I believe", continued Hixson. Donning the Crown, Cloak and drinking from the kingly Goblet, Hixson victory court concluded in the Jody Millard Pest Control Victory Lane with family, crew and friends.

Raceday drew forty-three (43) unsanctioned Crate Late Model's from around the South. Four heat races would set the stage, allowing the Top 5 finishers passage to the KING of CRATE's "A" Main Feature. In heat # 1 Jerry Fowler of Acworth, GA would hold off Alan Green and Todd Morrow for the Pole Position victory. Green and Morrow battled the 15 lap dance, side-by-side for most of the heat for the runner-up spot. Ronnie Johnson survived a tangle with Chuck Padgett for the final transfer position, just behind former NATIONAL 100 CHAMP Jody Summerville. Heat # 2 saw Brian Pritchard defeat "THE BIG MAN in BLACK" Gamble. Unfortunately a reported 4-pound discrepancy at the scales negated "BP's" victory. Gamble was awarded the win with; Kayne Hickman, Mayo, Darel Owenbey and Lee Gray rounding out the field. Heat # 3 saw Aaron Ridley go from hero-to-zero (almost), when something broke on the leaders car with 2 laps remaining. Ridley salvaged narrowly a 4th place finish as Brian Burke took the checkers. In the final 15-lap heat Rick Hixson and teammate Jerry Coffman squared off. Hixson took the win with Cook passing Coffman for 2nd. Former ICE BOWL CHAMPION Bobby Mayse and Craig Burrows transferred.

Before the "A" Main Feature could roll-out the final four spots on the starting grid were needed to be filled. The 12-lap "B" Main Last Chance race served that purpose. William Thomas 2007 $50,000. FASTRAK Crate Champion took care of that one, in one of Rick Hixson's machines. "Ronnie Johnson hooked us up", stated Thomas before the feature. "It's a real good racecar and this place is real nice" commented the young racer from Phenix City, AL. Jeff Smith followed Thomas under the checkers, with Danny Pippen and Bobby Wilson also transferring to the "A" Main Feature. David Payne missed the feature by one spot with Cody Barnett, Mike Head, Brian Jackson, Reed Johnson, David Tindell, Boonie Gulett, Chad Chitwood, Michael Evans, Kenneth Sweatt and Scott Franks following. As flagman Chuck Christopher waved the green flag over the twenty-four starters, Gamble showed the way as Hixson made quick work of pole-sitter Fowler. Green was in-deep with Cook and Stewart just inside the Top 5 with Brian Burke following Hixson. Ridley and Gray would be the first-two outta action and Green would end his BOYD's season debut a few laps later.

Burke and Cook kept up within the Top 5 as Gamble worked thru heavy back-marker traffic. Hixson would put the noise of his machine underneath the # 27 "United Wrecker, Truck Service Co., Wilson Co." sponsored racecar several times, but it was Mayo the fans were keeping track of en route towards the front. The CHATTANOOGA FLASH was also coming to the front working on Blake Stewart, Mayse and Morrow in the latter half of the 40 lapper. Hixson soon had to deal with the #115 "A&K Transportation, Shorty's Shock Service, King of the Road Conversions, Stealth Racing Carburators, Mid-Nite Oil" sponsored GRT from Cleveland. Mayo kept roaring along the bottom, as Hixson began "toeing-the waters" on the high-side. Inside 5 remaining Gamble seemed in firm control as RJ was working on entering the Top 5 for the first time. With Mayo now entrenched in second and gaining-ground on Gamble, Hixson went full force to the high-side with 2 circuits remaining. Hixson made the winning pass, driving past both Gamble and Mayo. At the checkers it was Hixson, with Mayo narrowly passing Gamble for 2nd. Cook finished 4th and Johnson surpassed Burke for a Top 5 finish, after starting 17th. Behind Burke, Mayse, Morrow, Stewart and Hixson's teammate Coffman within the Top 10.

In other racing action A-Hobby was won by Tod Hernandez, whom seems unstoppable early this season. Larry Higgins in a new racecar finished 2nd with HUNDRED DOLLAR Bill Wilson 3rd. Corey Cresswell and Len McNeese rounded out the Top 5. In the Steel-Head Late Model division Mark Rosner was the winner of the 26 cars entered. The WIZARD OF ROZ claimed he's looking forward and battling Rick Hixson for the $2,000. in next Friday's BORDER WARS at BOYD's SPEEDWAY. Robert Stutts, Andy Miller, Ruben Mayfield and Greg Husky rounded out the Top 5. In the final feature of the evening Kenny Kizzar topped the FWD division. Michael Arp, Shaney Forgey and Steve Boyd finished 2nd thru 4th. Next Friday night gets underway at 7PM EST with a Round # 1 of the SIX (6) race Mini-Series, for the Steel-head LM's. Crate Late Models return to top the undercard, with a $800. to-WIN regular racing feature. For more information visit the tracks web-site www.boydsspeedway.com.
