FROM WRECKERS TO CHECKERS: SPRINT-CAR MANIA
DELIVERED THE ACTION!!!

Chattanooga/Ringgold (9/3/10) --- As per the norm for the past 3 years, SPRINT-CAR MANIA broughtout the largest crowd of the season to the BOYD's SPEEDWAY Friday night, despite MotherNature tossing a 5PM curve-ball rain shower. With over 40 Sprint-Car teams again, on the grounds the U.S.C.S and the GEORGIA OUTLAW MINI SPRINTS took to the track in force as drivers from 8 states battled it out for the top prize. From wreckers to checkers both series saw witness to late race red flag cautions. In the U.S.C.S 30-lap GOODYEAR TIRE feature race, it would be Matt Linder smacking the turn 2 wall and flipping violently with 3 laps remaining. While in the 20-lap MINI SPRINTS feature, leader Jim Wall crashed and flipped on the front-straightaway coming to the White Flag. Three of BOYD's SPEEDWAY's local divisions accompanied SPRINT-CAR MANIA on the undercard. Len McNeese of Chattanooga, held off Booger Brooks for the A-Hobby vivctory, while Jason Brown of Cleveland took the B-Hobby victory. The FWD feature finale was won by Jason Whitt of Rossville. In the U.S.C.S feature 5th starting Marshall Skinner exploded a powerbomb move, on his best friend, leader Derek Hagar on lap 16, to take the lead in heavy back-marker traffic. Skinner and Hagar who've raced together of years out of West Memphis, Arkansas would finish first and third, as THE ORIGINAL OUTLAW Terry Gray collected the runner-up spot. In the MINI SPRINT feature Sam Williams of Sugar Hill, GA would lead one lap, though it was the most important lap, the checkers. Heat race winner Shane Werner would finish 2nd with Matt McCullough 3rd. The U.S.C.S Sprint-Cars travel Sunday night to nearby Rome, GA to wrap up Labor Day Weekend. more...... story to follow later SATURDAY AFTERNOON

Picking up where he left off two (2) weeks ago in Talladega, Sam Williams of Sugar Grove, GA again found victory lane Friday night at BOYD's SPEEDWAY at the conclusion of SPRINT-CAR MANIA and the 20-lap GEORGIA OUTLAW MINI SPRINT feature. Leading only the checkered flag lap, Williams piloting his # 78 "JSI: Jesse Stutts Inc, Stallard Chassis" 3-G Engines mini-sprint, took it to JODY MILLARD PEST CONTROL Victory Lane after violently flipping in last years 2009 event. This year it was leader Jim Wall coming to the white-flag flipping violently down the front straightaway. The Monovia, Alabama driver was uninjured and dejectedly walked away from the crash, knowing he was just a lap and a few feet from his career first G.O.M.S feature win. Behind Williams at the conclusion of the race were Shane Werner in 2nd and Matt McCullough in 3rd. Dwight Pilgram and Kentucky's Jeremy Anderson rounded out the Top 5.

Former series Champion, Marshall Skinner from West Memphis, Arkansas passed team-mate Derek Hagar from Marion, Arkansas on lap 24 of the 30-lap United Sprint Car Series presented by Goodyear for the lead in the main event at Boyd's Speedway on Friday night to capture his fifth USCS main event of the 2010 season.
Defending series Champion Terry Gray who started sixth passed Hagar who lost his breaks on the following lap and came home in the runner-up spot. Another top rookie, 15 year-old Eric Riggins, Jr. from Charlotte, North Carolina who won the Engler Machine and Tool First Heat rounded out the top fivefinishers.

Chattanooga/Ringgold (8/27/10) --- For the second time this season "BILLY THE KID" BILLY OGLE JR. slugged it out against the "RINGGOLD KID" Jamie Perry for the 25 lap Steel-head LM feature Friday night at BOYD's SPEEDWAY. At racetime fifteen (15) teams signed in setting two heats prior to the $1,000 to-WIN "A" Main event. Winners RICK HIXSON and Perry brought the field to green, but it would be a lap 6 pass by the #201 "Kilby Equipment Sales, Grady King Construction, PBM Performance Products, Calhoun's Restaurant" sponsored GRT Competition Race Engines powered Knoxville, TN, racer, that would be key for the feature. "It's our third victory here in 2010" stated Ogle Jr. after visiting JODY MILLARD PEST CONTROL Victory Lane. "We like this Steel-head LM program ya'll run here on Friday's and it in turn helps our Super Late Model program, when ya'll have various series come in to BOYD's." Early leader Perry (1999 S.A.S Champion) hung on to finish second as points leader Hixson raced past LAMAR SCOGGINS. Rounding out the Top-5 was THE LAW-MAN MIKE TINKER. Ogle Jr. took the GA MEMORIAL RACE for the second consecutive time back in late May during a Volunteer Racing series event, that paid a $3,000 prize.

In other racing action: JASON THE FLYIN' WELSHAN of Maryville, TN was victorious in the Crate LM division against nineteen (19) other combatants. A wicked start to the feature handed KAYNE HICKMAN the lead early, but Welshan never gave up an conquered the 20 lap feature. JEFF SMITH was second passing Hickman late in the race with JERRY COFFMAN and last weekends winner CRAIG BURROWS round out the Top-5. In the A-Hobby division it was PATRICK WILSON taking the checkers. BOOGER BROOKS appeared to finish second but was found 15lbs. lite at the scales after the race. GARY JOHNSON, COREY CRESSWELL, CHUCK COOPER and DUSTIN CANSLER rounded out the Top-5. Points leader MIKE CHAPMAN picked up another B-Hobby feature win. TIM TOTHEROW, BRANDON FRANCIS, ALVIN SEWELL and JACOB STEWART followed Chapman across the finishline. For the second consecutive week JAMES DYKES has taking the FWD finale feature. MATT PATTON (whom was at the epicenter of all the brew-ha-ha last weekend) finished a strong runner-up to Dykes. Rounding out the Top-5 were; BRAD CROSS, MICHAEL ARP and TOM GILBERT. Next Friday 9/3 the Steel-head & Crate LM's are off for SPRINT-CAR MANIA II. A&B Hobby as well as FWD will be on the undercard. Visit www.BOYDsSPEEDWAY.com for more details.

ARP & RJ BATTLEBRAWL
FOR HOT AUGUST NIGHTS S.R.R.S VICTORY

photo's JERRY BOWEN (www.ActionShotsEtc.com)

Chattanooga/Ringgold (8/20/2010) --- Skip Arp and Ronnie Johnson put on a BATTLEBRAWL for the ages Friday night at BOYD's SPEEDWAY for the $3,000. HOT AUGUST NIGHTS Southern Regional Racing Series event. Leading the first 10 laps from his CAT-BIRDS SEAT (outside pole) Arp was surpassed by 5th the starting RJ whom seemed well en route to his 9th win of 2010. Arp flanked by S.R.R.S regular Josh Putnam came roaring back to life with clear track ahead, just prior to halfway in the 40 lapper and regained the top spot. Johnson wasn't thru and just like a heavyweight prize fighter, got back into the lead passing Arp with a little over a dozen laps left. Johnson seemed to (once again) be the man to beat, but with 5 laps to go, the driveshaft would jump ship, thus handing the victory to Arp. "We were lucky tonight..." stated Arp in JODY MILLARD PEST CONTROL Victory Lane, standing next to the Bobby Giffin owned # 97 "Stanley Best Heating & Cooling, Curtis Equipment Sales" sponsored GRT racecar. "I dunno what happened to him (RJ) but we'll take it. When he passed me, I thought we'll we ain't the best tonight, then all the sudden the car got better." Arp's 3rd win of 2010 comes once again with the S.R.R.S after taking a May BOYD's event and splitting a double header in nearby Cleveland, TN.

At racetime thirty-one (31) Super Late Model teams had signed in and after local division heat races qualifying time trials (two cars at a time) took to the track. Three groups readied, which were locking in the Top-3 fastest to the feature, thus leaving the remainer of each group to run 1 of 3 B-Mains. Local racer Kevin Gibson would dice up the competition early setting fast time with a 14:075. Putnam and Crossville, TN, racer Brett Wyatt also were locked in within the first group. In Group 2; Chad Ogle would hit his marks outqualifying Brandon Kinzer and Tony Morris. Group 3 saw Johnson lead the charge. That was until Arp hit the track clocking a 14:158 earning the outside FRONT ROW JOE position. Anthony White was the final qualifier locked in behind RJ. The B-Mains went off without a hitch as Randy Weaver in the # B1 "Bob Harris, Perferred Sandblasting, Ellis Contracting" sponsored GRT took the victory earning him the 10th overall starting position. Jake Knowles and William Thomas driving an unmarked # 22T "J.W. Miller Land & Timber, Gils Auto Sales, Extreme Power Sports" sponsored Scorpion / Lamar Hines powered got wins in the other two B-Mains.

With curfew approaching the S.R.R.S field formed on the frontstretch and took off with the wave of James Burkhart's green flag. Arp took command as Gibson quickly faded from his pole position. Ogle and Putnam held on for second and third as Johnson black/red shark-fin sliced thru the waters on the very bottom of the surface. Craig Burrows, who'd just won the Crate LM feature, ended his night prematurely as the DIRTY WHITE BOY brought out caution #1. The restart would see Ellis go-around on the frontstretch and his night would also be done. Closing in on lap 10 RJ made his move on leader Arp and with a little dose of lapped traffic the deal was done and 5th starting Johnson was now in command. After minor cautions Arp would come back to life around the lap 15 mark and regain the lead using the high-line. A close call came for the leaders Arp & Johnson during the race when LIL' John Owenby lost power on the frontstretch making the leaders take evasive action. Putnam's Top-5 run would end with a blown engine breeding life into the # 18 "Kinzer Drilling Co., Will Kinzer Autism Foundation, Quality Gas & Oil" GRT machine of Brandon Kinzer. Johnson proved to NOT go quietly into that Arp goodnight, and raced back into the lead around halfway.

Unable to do anything but watch his fellow Tennesseeian Arp held solidly to second with Kinzer, Ogle and Tony THE TIGER Morris within the Top-5. Toward the end RJ was ridin' in stride as David Payne and Weaver began battling Ogle and Knowles within the Top-5. Turn-3 on the 35th circuit and RJ would see his 9th victory of 2010 fly rite outta the ****pit as his driveshaft decided to exit. Kinzer would now trail Arp as third place Ogle was now trekked by WILLE-T. The final restart Arp didin't miss a beat, as Kinzer got relief from Ogle's battle with Thomas. At the line of lap 40 Thomas would be in third as Ogle, was in a 3-wide battle against the # 8 "Payne Racing Tire, Gibson Motorsports" MasterSbilt and Weaver's machine. At the line both Payne and Weaver inched past Ogle for a Top-5 finish. In two week; SPRINT-CAR MANIA returns to the BOYD's SPEEDWAY. The U.S.C.S Outlaw Sprint Cars headline with the GEORGIA MINI SPRINTS. Next Friday (Aug. 27th) a Full Regular Program is ontap with Steel-Head LM's, Crate LM's, A&B Hobby and FWD. TOTHEROW & CRESSWELL TOP A&B HOBBY FEATURES

Chattanooga/Ringgold (8/13/10) --- Tim Totherow of Signal Mtn, TN found his way to JODY MILLARD PEST CONTROL Victory Lane for the first
time Friday night, winning the B-Hobby feature race. Totherow fell from a six-foot ladder in 2006 and crushed multiple vertebrae in his back. Doctors said he’d never walk again, muchless drive his # T39 "Carolina Trailers" sponsored racecar. After surgery and ten (10) weeks inpatient therapy as well as a year of outpatient therapy, Totherow is able to walk short distances with assistance of canes. In 2007, outfitted with special controls inside the cockpit of his racecar, he again started racing. In the A-Hobby Corey Cresswell kept up movement of A-Hobby racers in keeping Booger Brooks outta victory lane, now for the past three (3) weeks. Rick Hixson and Jeff Smith continued their dominant ways in the Steel-Head and Crate Late Model (respectively) divisions. Smith has now three-in-a-row Crate LM feature race victories, while Hixson has won three outta the last four Steel-Head LM races. Matt Patton beat points leader Michael Arp in the FWD finale feature.

It was another night of hot weather with thunderstorms threatening all around, but nothing would stop the racing thunder that was happening at one of the best 1/3 mile clay ovals in the south. The fans that waited and watched as lightening and thunder was striking all around were treated to some of the best racing of the season. First up would bring the B-Hobby class for their one and only heat race. A early caution in turn two caused by the #8 Brandon Francis would bunch the field back up, but Daniel Johnston would finish in front of #1 Alvin Sewell and #T39 Tim Totherow. Next up would bring the 19 Crate Late Models to the track to duke it our in two heat races. In Heat #1 Craig Burrows would start along side Jason Welshan, but it would be Welshan jumping to the early lead and hold off hardcharging Chip Brindle with Burrows finishing third. In Heat #2 Fulton, Mississippi's Eric Cooley would lead the field to the green. The recent dominator of the Crate Late Models Jeff "Spanky" Smith would hound Cooley for laps but was never able to make the pass. A single car caution for the spin of Points Leader Robby Mason in turn 4 would set up for a late race shootout. Cooley would hold off Smith and Elbert McCullough for the win. In Heat Race #1 of the A-Hobby the field would be at a disadvantage from the start as multi-winner and points leader Booger Brooks would lead the field to the green. Brooks would capture the win followed by Gary Johnson and Jeff McKenzie. In Race #2 Corey Cresswell would find himself back in the winning ways as he held off Steve Tate and Donnie Johnson. Next out was the Steel Headed Late Models for the first of two Heats. Nathan Parris and Lamar Scoggins (driving the back-up car of Rick Hixson) would lead the field to the green. But it was the Cajun Veteran of Rick Hixson taking the win followed by Scoggins and Jamie Perry. In Race #2 Todd Hernandez would hold off the field for his heat race victory and was followed across the line by David Tinker and Todd Morrow. The last of the qualifying heats would bring the FWD's to the speedway. Race #1 Brad Cross took the win followed by James Dykes and Adam Reseigh. Race #2 Matt Patton would hold off Michael Arp and Jarod Blevins for the win.

With all the heat races finished and the line-ups set for the nights Feature Races the call was sent to the pits for the B-Hobby to bring their machines to the starting line. Daniel Johnston and Alvin Sewell would lead the field to the green. Sewell seemed to be in complete control until a late race mechanical problem would turn the lead over to Tim Totherow. Tim came close to his first ever victory a couple of weeks ago only to see his chances slip away with mechanical problems of his own. But after long hours of physical therapy from a fall that has left him partical paralyzed he final had found what he dreamed one day he would do. Tim had not only defeated the odds that he would race again, but on this night he was on top of the world. "Way to go Tim, you are a great roll model for us all". Rounding out the top 5 would be Brandon Francis, Daniel Johnston, Charles Williams and Brandon Armitage. The Crate Late Models drove to the starting line as the fans scooted to the edge of their seats. Welshan and Cooley brought the full field to the green. Welshan took the early lead and set sail. The multi-victorious Jeff Smith quickly moved in to second. As the race settle down up front with Welshan leading Smith the action behind them got even hotter. Racing 3 and 4 wide for laps between Rex Richey, David Tindell, Kenny Kizzar and Robby Mason the fans were getting their moneys worth. But this night would appear to be all Welshan and he crossed the finish line in front of Jeff Smith breaking a 4 race win streak. But as Welshan crossed the scales he was found to be light handing the victory over to Smith. Jeff stated later that evening "that he has never had the luck he has had this year". Some times its better to be lucky than good, but Jeff Smith has been both. Following Smith was Chip Brindle, Craig Burrows, Elbert McCullough and Kayne Hickman. In the A-Hobby Feature a late race mechancial problem would sideline race leader Booger Brooks handing the lead over to Corey Cresswell. Cresswell would take the win followed by Donnie Johnson, Garry Johnson, Blake Armitage and Steve Tate. The Steel-Headed Late Models were up next. Polesitters Rick Hixson and Todd Hernandez would bring the field to the green. Entering turn one on the first lap Hernandez drove his #T6 into the side of Hixson spinning Hixson around. With Hixson sitting sideways in turn one the field started stacking up behind him. The field was put under the red flag to untangle the mess. Once the field was reset the green flew again with Hixson jumping out front. His teammate Lamar Scoggins tucked right under his rear bumper and followed him to the front. Hernandez slipped back to 6th place before gather his machine and began working his way back to the front. The race was up front between Hixson and Scoggins. Hixson had made the commitment he was going to run the top which left the bottom open for Scoggins. And for 20 laps they raced side by side each waiting for the other to slip up. But with two veteran drivers neither slipped and Hixson would take a hard fought victory over Scoggins, Todd Hernandez (fought his way back to third ), Brian Jackson and Pat Castleberry. The last race of the evening brought the FWD's to the speedway. Matt Patton would survive a field plagued with flat tires. Following Patton would be Michael Arp, Adam Reseigh, Hailey Cresswell and Denver Shrum.

H EAVY HITTERS INVADE: OGLE JR. BEATS PERRY & ARP

Chattanooga/Ringgold (7/30/2010) --- Every Friday could be called the Summer Heats with the hot temperatures we're having in the south and this Friday was no different. The temperatures were hot once again as the fans rolled into Boyd's Speedway hoping the racing would be just as hot. The B-HOBBY'S were first to take to the Speedway in the first of two Heats. In Heat #1 Brandon Francis held off Roy Oxford and Mike Chapman for the win. Early exits by Chapman for a flat and Johnston and Jeff Irvin with mechanical problems made the win a little easier. In Heat #2 Lee Harbin jumped out front at the drop of the green and went on to capture the win over Alvin Sewell and Tim Totherow. The CRATE LATE MODELS were up next and the question on everyones mind was Could Anyone Stop The 17S of Jeff Smith. Having won several races in a row both at Boyd's Speedway and neighboring North Georgia Speedway could he be stopped. In Heat #1 Smith's teammate Randy Hill #17H would lead the field to the green while outside polesitter #A1 Kenny Kizzar battled closely by. Hill seemed to be under control until on lap 5 Kenny Kizzar showed his muscle and passed Hill. Kizzar would take the heat victory over Hill and Points Leader Robby Mason. In Heat #2 Jeff Smith would have to try working his way to the front from his 4th starting position. With #91 Heath Hindman and Jimmy Webb bringing the field to the green the battle was underway. On lap 2 Hindman overtook Webb for the lead as Smith followed. The race wasn't decided until the very end as Hindman held off hardcharging Smith at the finish. Webb followed Jeff Smith for third. Next up was the A-HOBBY Division as Polesitter #1ST was unable to make the call due to mechancial issues moving youngster #18 Dustin Cansler to the pole. But as the green flew Cansler makes contact with another racer and cuts down a tire and ends his heat race. Chuck Cooper holds off Jordan Rodabaugh and Blake Armatige for the victory in the first of two heats. In Heat #2 it was a poker hand of a couple of pairs starting up front. The pair of #3's and the pair of Johnson's led the field to the green. With the #3 Donnie Johnson holding off #148 Booger Brooks and the #J3 Garry Johnson for the win. Jeff McKenzie brought up the rear, but after having trouble during hot laps left the race track went home and brought his backup race car to the speedway just in time to start his heat. The stellar field of STEEL HEADED LATE MODELS were up next. With Davey Davis and Andy Miller starting from the front row the battle was soon to be behind them. As Davis fell backwards through the field the hardcharging #97 driven by Skip Arp was on Mr. Miller's bumper. Arp took his time working lap after lap until on lap 10 made his move passing Miller for the lead. Arp was followed by Andy Miller, Jason Welshan and Billy Ogle Jr. In Heat #2 fans would wonder could the racing be any better. Roger ****son and Jamie Perry started up front but Perry would let everyone know he was going to be a factor in the nights outcome. Perry would capture the win and would be awarded the outsite pole position for the nights feature along side Skip Arp. Perry was followed by Rick Hixson and Roger ****son. The last Heats of the night would bring the FWD to the racing surface. Hudgins would hold off Blake Hall and Derrick Forgey for the win. In Heat #2 the race would see its first RED FLAG as the cars of Jill Nichols and Cody Raby got together going down the backstretch and hit head-on into the backstretch wall. While special care was taken to see that both drivers were ok. Nichols would be removed and placed in the track ambulance for observation. She later refused to be transported to the hospital, but the cars were a total loss with heavy front end damage. Once racing resumed a green white checkered race was ordered and Tommy Hughes led Matt Patton and James Dykes across the finish line.

With an extremely fast race track all night long it was now time to bring each class out for the FEATURE EVENTS. Up first would see the B-HOBBY's roll to the front stretch for the Feature Introductions. Starting on row #1 would be #8 Brandon Francis and #7 Lee Harbin as the green flag flew Francis assumed the early lead. Quickly moving into second was the #1 Alvin Sewell driven machine The two battled lap after lap until on lap 11 the #48 of Bobby Phillips would take over second. On lap 13 a three car crash in turn four would end the night for the cars of Jeff Irvin, Charles Williams and Daniel Johnston and Lee Harbin would also experience transmission problems and have his night come to a close. Alvin Sewell would take yet another victory followed across the scales by Bobby Phillips ( who was DQ'D for being to light) moving Lebron Miller into second followed by Tim Totherow and Mike Chapman. Now it was time to answer the earlier question; Could Anyone Stop #17S Jeff Smith? As the CRATE LATE MODELS rolled into position led by Kenny Kizzar and Heath Hindman. At the drop of the green flag Hindman took over where he had left off leading Jeff Smith. As Hindman settled in he was being pursued by Smith from both the top and the bottom. On lap 9 Smith made his move as Hindman pushed high in turn 2 opening the door for Smith on the bottom. Smith would take the lead followed by Hindman. Kizzar would also pass Hindman on Lap 14 bring Robby Mason along with him. The question was soon answered and on this night Smith would once again visit Victory Lane. Following Smith was Kenny Kizzar, Robby Mason, Craig Burrows and Tyler Millwood ( who would also come up light at the scales). The A-HOBBY's were up next hoping to improve from the previous weeks demolition derby type results. As the green flag flew the same results seemed to be the order. As the cars of Garry Johnson, Booger Brooks would get together sending them both to the pits for repairs. Donnie Johnson held the early lead with Chuck Cooper closing in. On lap 10 the caution flew again for the J2 of Jeff McKenzie in his backup race car for leaking oil around the track, also the #148 Booger Brooks exited for good after returning from an earlier wreck that had broken a left rear shock. Donnie Johnson would take the victory over Chuck Cooper, Blake Armitage, Corey Cresswell and Jordan Rodabaugh. Next out would bring a 18 car field of some of the strongest competitors for a regular weekly show to the Speedway. With names like Skip Arp, Jamie Perry, Billy Ogle Jr. Kevin Gibson, Jason Welshan and Rick Hixson along with many other the fans were sure to see a outstanding race. And as the field came to the green led by Arp and Perry it was apparent they were going to get their money's worth tonight. As Perry took the early lead followed by Arp they would continue to battle. With Billy Ogle Jr. making his way to the front from his 7th starting position he used patience as he worked both the high and low grooves. On lap 12 Billy Ogle Jr would pass Arp for second wasting no time on lap 15 he took the lead away from Jamie Perry. Once Ogle Jr. established himself as the race leader he never looked back. Rounding out the top five was Perry, Arp, Andy Miller and Brian Burke. In the last race of the evening the FWD would see another repeat winner with #T9 Tommy Hughes holding off the field for his Victory. Hughes was followed by Michael Arp(starting last), Anthony Hudgins, Derrick Forgey and JR Kittrle. It was another Great Evening of Racing at Boyd's Speedway. Thanks for a track well prepared for side by side racing throughout the evening. Everybody was headed home by the 11 pm curfew.

A NEW BABY BOYd:

Chattanooga, TN (7/27/10) --- My friend Scott Boyd driver of the # 77 "Boyd-Built Racecars & Parts" Crate LM and his wife April welcomed in a new baby boy to the BOYD family. Scott is son of Butch and Wanda Boyd who are the patriarchs of the BOYD SPEEDWAY bloodlines. Mason Boyd was born 7/27/10. Somebody teach the photographer how to correctly set the date on the camera........

GREENE WINS A-HOBBY GREEN - BOOGER's STREAK ENDS

photo's by: www.ACTIONSHOTSETC.com

With the thermometer reaching the 100 degree mark and a heat index well above that, the fans that came to Boyd'sSpeedway on this night, got to see just how hot the racing would be. With some raceteams taking some time off due to the heat there was still plenty to fight over the prize money in each division. First out for heat races would be theB-HOBBY's. With recent winner #1 Alvin Sewell starting from the pole he would see the #T39 Tim Totherow take the lead away before lap one was complete. Totherow would take his first heat victory followed by #7 Daniel Johnston and #07 Steve King. In race #2 the front row was filled with a couple of veteran B-Hobby competitors in #2 Mike Chapman and #8 Brandon Francis. They would show the field just how its done finishing one two and they were followed by #9 Lee Harbin. Next out would be the CRATE LATE MODEL, with #111 David Tindell starting from the pole he had hope to finish more than a lap this week. Last week Mr. Tindell was involved in a lap one wreck that ended his run even before it got started. But on this night he made sure he stayed out of trouble by leading every lap. He was followed by #17S Jeff Smith and #30 Jerry Coffman. In race #2 Craig Burrows hoped to improve his luck this week as well, he followed Mr. Tindell's example and lead flag to flag followed to the finish by #9 Elbert McCullough and #99 Todd Morrow. With the next Heat's rolling to the speedway the A-HOBBY would bring 22 racercars trying to get those top starting positions for their feature run. Blake Armitage #37 would lead the field to the green, but before we could get started the cars of Russell Schell and Booger Brooks would have trouble. Armitage would go on to take the victory followed by #37 Chuck Cooper and #12 Corey Cresswell. In heat #2 Jeff McKinze would bring the field to the green, but would see his lead be short lived as Robbie Greene driving his yellow #00 take the early lead and told everyone else come catch me if your can. No one could but he was chased by #72 Patrick Wilson and #3 Richard Dixson. The next to the last group lined up for the first of two heats in the STEEL HEADED LATE MODELS. With Brian Jackson and Stephanie Powell leading the group to the green Jackson would take the early lead while Powell's night came to a hard stop on lap 4 with a hard hit into the front stretch wall sending her to the trailer for the evening. Jackson would race hard only to see 1999 Southern All-Star Champion Jamie Perry take his lead away on lap five and later would be passed for second by Rick Hixson. Jackson would go on to finish third. In race #2 Todd Hernandez started from the outside front row starting position. And at the drop of green he used the power from his Hickman Racing Engine to power past #11 Lee Gray for the lead. Hernandez would go on to lead every lap followed by #T21 Mike Tinker and #11 Lee Gray. Last would bring to the fans delight a FWD division that must have changed their rules to a DEMOLITION DERBY. Leaving only three racers on the track at the end. James Dykes, Brad Cross and Richard Hickman would finish one two and three. In the last heat Micheal Arp would take the victory followed by Haily Cresswell and Jill Nichols.

The wind was calm, the temperature was hot, now it was time to race for the money and even some of the racers temps were hot by now. The B-HOBBY was first up and once again they had read from the book of DEMOLITION DERBY. With #T39 Tim Totherow leading the way, to what appeared to be his first ever victory, he saw it all come to a halt on lap 7 with mechanical problems. That handed the lead over to #8 Brandon Francis he appeared to be on his way to victory lane when he and the #1 Alvin Sewell got together going down the backstretch ending both of their nights. This would give the lead to Micheal Brooks with two laps remaining. Brooks would go on to see victory lane for the first time followed by #21 Lebron Miller, #7 Daniel Johnston, #9 Lee Harbin and #43 Charles Williams. The CRATE LATE MODELS were called to the track for their feature event. With #111 David Tindell starting from the pole he wondered just how he could keep the field behind him on this night. He appeared to able to do just that until lap 12 when a lap car blocked his lane opening the door for Jeff Smith to sneak into the lead. The frustration set in for Tindell and he saw not only Smith pass him but also Elbert McCullough, Jerry Coffman and Robbie Mason before he could settle into fifth. Jeff Smith would go on to take yet another victory followed by McCullough, Coffman, Mason and Tindell. With the A-HOBBY hosting 22-cars Chuck Cooper and Robbie Greene would make up the front row by winning their earlier heats and would bring the field to the green. And when the green flag flew it was all GREEN as Robbie Greene never looked back taking his First Victory followed by #12 Corey Cresswell, #J3 Garry Johnson, #72 Patrick Wilson and #148 Booger Brooks. The STEEL HEADED LATE MODELS rolled to the front with Jamie Perry and Todd Hernandez leading the way. After a failed start, the field would take the green for the second time. Perry would overpower Hernandez into turn one taking the early lead. But behind them both was the veteran #16 Rick Hixson trying to improve from his last week troubles. As Perry seemed to have everything under control running the bottom, Rick Hixson decided he didn't want to play follow the leader. So on lap 4 Hixson made a daring move around Perry from the top side and said goodbye to the field. A couple of late cautions including Perry's motor going up in smoke with two laps remaining would bunch the field up on the restart. But on this night Mr. Hixson had them covered he was followed by #T6 Todd Hernandez, #T21 Mike Tinker, #B4 Jimmy Webb and #00 Ruben Mayfield. The last group of FWD would come to the track with Victory on their minds. But the earlier DEMOLITION Derby had taken a few competitors out earlier. Brad Cross would take the victory over Michael Arp, #T1 Todd Wright, #8 David Britton and #78 Richard Hickman. With all the racing completed before 10:30 the remaining fans were treated with a few laps from a local Mini-Sprint car checking out the racing surface and a autograph session with all of tonights Victory Winners. Great Job by staff on a really HOT! night.

WEAVER DENIES HOLLINGSWORTH BOYD's SuMMeR SLaMMeR SWEEP

photo's by: Thomas Headrickson (www.dt52photos.com)

Chattanooga/Ringgold (7/16/10) --- On a night where the dice were rolled and the gamble paid off... BOYD's SPEEDWAY owners made the rite call Friday night when a 5:45PM Thunderstorm threatened to cancel the nights SuMMeR SLaMMeR 40: Southern All-Stars event. The Harvey Bros. and GM Gar Dickson forged on and fans were treated to one of the best Super Late Model events of the season. Qualifying time trials took to the track after some heat racing action from the local divisions. Making his BOYD's SPEEDWAY debut RIGHT-FOOT Ronnie Lee Hollingsworth of Northport, Alabama not only set fast time among the 29-entrants, but set a NEW TRACK RECORD in doing so. Hollingsworth tripped the clock at 13:179, beating Billy Ogle Jr's 2009 mark of 13:320 by almost two-tenths of a second.

Joining Hollingsworth, turning also a faster track record lap, would be local Ringgold, GA racer Kevin Gibson, as the racer know as AXE, smashed the qualifying clock at 13:247. David Payne, Jake Knowles, Derek Ellis, Mike Weeks, Kentucky's Brandon Kinzer, Louisiana's Scott Creel, Shane Clanton and Texian Chris Brown were all locked in on their qualifying lap respectfully, leaving a host of top notch S.A.S regulars looking at having to race into the "A" Main thru a pair of "B" Main Consi's. In the first 10 lap race Randy THE DREAM Weaver took the checkers, earning himself the 11th overall starting position for the feature. Chad Ogle and KY's Chris Wilson followed. In Consi #2 it was Mark Vineyard holding off 1999 S.A.S Champion Jamie Perry and East Tennessee sensation Shanon Buckingham.

A four-wide SALUTE to the SuMMeR SLaMMeR fans and Hollingsworth rocketed forth into the lead, leaving Gibson to grapple with Knowles and Weeks. Knowles settled things quickly and was following Hollingsworth's lead, til Weaver decided to join the fray with a fourth of the way home. Former 2008 BOYD's OCTOBER-FAST winner Shane Clanton was marching towards the front but the GEORGIA GIANT was overpowered by Consi. #1 runner-up Ogle, as the SEVIERVILLE ASSAILANT began knocking off position after position. With Gibson falling from the lime-light of the Top 5, the DITCHDIGGER came to a close on the front straight-away. Skip Arp and provisional starter Freddy Smith's night came to an end simultaniously as Weaver hounded Hollingsworth lap after lap.

Finally with a little over a handful of laps remaining the #116 "BKW Disaster Relief & Rebuild, The Bailey Co., Byrd's Radiator" sponsored Bloomquist /Race Engine Design powered past Hollingsworth, whom would fall from the runner-up finish with less the 2 laps remaining for a disappointing 11th place nod, due to a fan-belt demise. Weaver rejoiced in JODY MILLARD PEST CONTROL Victory Lane and told S.A.S series announcer Travis Scott all about it: “Thank you fans for coming out and sticking with us during all that rain,” Weaver stated. “This was a good race for the fans. We had trouble with a right front shock and that’s what made me run that crazy line,” continued Weaver, “But that crazy line is what won it for me.”

Pics By: Jerry Bowen (www.actionshotsetc.com)

WITH THE CELEBRATION OF INDEPENDENCE DAY JUST AROUND THE CORNER, BOYD'S SPEEDWAY CHOOSE TO HAVE THEIR FIREWORKS ON THE TRACK THIS WEEKEND. WITH SEVERAL WINS FOR MOTHER NATURE LATELY THE STAFF OF BOYD'S SPEEDWAY CHOOSE TO RACE THIS WEEKEND AFTER ALL. WITH A FULL FIELD OF CARS ENTERED IN EACH CLASS BATTLING FOR THE EXTRA MONEY PAID OUT THIS WEEKEND. FIRST OUT WOULD BE THE B-HOBBY DIVISION IN THEIR ONLY HEAT RACE OF THE EVENING. WITH ALVIN SEWELL RUNNING WELL LATELY HE SHOWED EARLY IT WOULD TAKE A GOOD EFFORT TO KNOCK HIM FROM HIS WINNING THRONE. HE WOULD TAKE THE WIN FOLLOWED BY MIKE CHAPMAN AND NEWCOMER LEE HARBIN. NEXT UP WOULD BE THE EVERY COMPETITIVE CRATE LATE MODELS. THIS CLASS HAS BECOME ONE OF THE MOST EXCITING GROUPS TO WATCH WEEK IN AND WEEK OUT AND THIS WEEK WOULD BE NO DIFFERENT. POLESITTER DAVID TINDELL WAS UNABLE TO MEET THE CALL TO RACE IN THE FIRST OF TWO HEATS. THIS WOULD MOVE SCOTT BOYD TO THE POLE POSITION, BUT IT WOULD BE THE VETERAN DRIVER OF JEFF SMITH PILOTING THE 17S FOR HILL MOTORSPORTS TAKING THE WIN FOLLOWED BY JIMMY WEBB AND RANDY HILL IS THE 17H (HILL MOTORSPORTS) COMING FROM THE REAR TO FINISH THIRD. A FIRST LAP CAUTION WOULD SEND THE CARS OF #18 MICHAEL COMBS, #77 SCOTT BOYD AND THE #77A OF DYLAN AMES TO THE PITS FOR EARLY REPAIRS. IN THE SECOND HEAT POLESITTER JERRY COFFMAN BACK IN HIS FAMILAR #30 WOULD TAKE A HARD FOUGHT VICTORY OVER TEAMMATE RICK HIXSON. CRAIG BURROWS WOULD CROSS THE SCALES AS THE THIRD PLACE CAR, BUT WAS FOUND TO BE 7 LBS LITE MOVING ROBBY MASON UP TO THIRD AND MR. BURROWS TO THE TAIL END OF THE FIELD. THE CALL WAS SENT TO THE DRIVERS OF THE A-HOBBY TO BRING THEIR CARS TO THE RACING SURFACE IN THE FIRST OF TWO HEATS. NEWCOMER #1 OF DOUG COBB WOULD START FROM THE POLE BUT WOULD SEE THE LEAD TAKEN AWAY VERY EARLY AS THE #J3 OF GARRY JOHNSON WOULD SET SAIL TOWARD HIS VICTORY. A LAP SIX CAUTION WOULD TAKE #3 DONNIE JOHNSON, #T12 TONY LEWIS AND #J42 ALLEN JOLLEY SCRAMBLING TO THE PITS FOR REPAIRS. GARRY JOHNSON WOULD BE FOLLOWED BY CHUCK COOPER AND DUSTIN CANSLER. IN HEAT RACE #2 COREY CRESSWELL WOULD START FROM THE POLE AND LEAD FLAG TO FLAG FOLLOWED BY #48 BOOGER BROOKS ( BORROWING HIS DAD'S CAR) AND JEFF PAIGE. THE STEEL HEADED LATE MODELS WERE UP NEXT IN THE FIRST OF TWO HEATS. IN HEAT #1 POLESITTERS CHAD ANDERSON AND ANDY MILLER WOULD BRING THE FIELD TO THE GREEN BUT IT WAS THAT FAMILAR #16 OF RICK HIXSON DOING THE DOUBLE DUTY ON TONIGHTS ACTION TAKING THE EARLY LEAD. HE WOULD BE CHALLAENGED BY MILLER AND MIKE TINKER RIGHT UP TO THE CHECKERED FLAG. JUSTIN FAIRBANKS WOULD SEE HIS CAR SPIN TO THE OUTSIDE TURN 2 WALL ON LAP 9 ENDING HIS HOPES OF A GOOD FINISH TONIGHT. IN HEAT #2 FANS WOULD SEE A STELLAR STARTING LINE-UP INCLUDING JAMIE PERRY, TODD MORROW, REX RICHEY, JASON WELSHAN, KAYNE HICKMAN, ROGER DICKSON AND MORE. IT WOULD BE #P4 JAMIE PERRY TAKING A CLOSE VICTORY OVER TODD MORROW AND ROGER DICKSON AS PERRY'S MOTOR STARTING GOING SOUTH ON THE LAST LAP. THE NIGHTS FINAL HEAT RACE WINNERS IN THE FWD WERE TOMMY HUGHES AND MATT PATTON.

IT WAS NOW FEATURE TIME OR ON THE 4TH OF JULY WEEKEND (FIREWORKS TIME). FIRST OUT WOULD BE THE B-HOBBY AND WOULD ANYBOBY HAVE ANYTHING FOR ALVIN SEWELL ON THIS NIGHT. IT APPEARED NOT UNTIL A LATE RACE MOVE WITH TWO LAPS REMAINING WHEN LEE HARBIN TOOK OVER THE LEAD AND WENT ON TO VISIT VICTORY LANE FOR THE FIRST TIME. HE WAS FOLLOWED BY SEWELL, MIKE CHAPMAN AND DANIEL JOHNSTON. A FIRST LAP CAUTION WOULD END TIM TOTHEROW'S EVENING AS HE TOOK A HARD HIT INTO THE FRONT STRAIGHTAWAY WALL. WITH THE B-HOBBY'S FINISHED IT WAS TIME TO BRING OUT THE BIG DADDY FIREWORKS THE CRATE LATE MODELS. STARTING FROM THE FRONT ROW JEFF SMITH AND JERRY COFFMAN WOULD BRING THE FIELD TO THE GREEN. A LAP ONE SPIN BY #86 WOULD BRING OUT THE EARLY CAUTION, THEN ON LAP 2 #23 CRAIG BURROWS WOULD SPIN IN TURN THREE BRINGING OUT THE SECOND CAUTION. ON THE NEXT RESTART RANDY HILL #17H WOULD BE PENALIZED FOR JUMPING THE START AND SENT TO THE REAR. ALL WHILE THE 17S OF JEFF SMITH WAS HOLDING ONTO A VERY SLIM LEAD OVER JERRY COFFMAN AND RICK HIXSON. ON LAP 5 RANDY HILL HITS THE INSIDE WALL OF TURN 4 ENDING HIS NIGHT ALONG WITH MICHEAL COMBS. AS THE RACE GOT BACK UNDER WAY THE RACING WAS SO CLOSE THAT ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS YOU COULD HAVE THROWN A BLANKET OVER THE TOP THREE. AT THE HALF WAY POINT THE CAUTION FOR #99 OF TODD MORROW WOULD FLY AS MORROW WAS LOOSING FUEL. THE TOP THREE WOULD CONTINUE THEIR BATTLE FOR THE WIN WHEN ON LAP 18 JASON WELSHAN WOULD PASS RICK HIXSON FOR THIRD. JEFF SMITH WOULD TAKE THE VICTORY FOLLOWED BY JERRY COFFMAN, WELSHAN, HIXSON AND ROBBY MASON. NEXT UP A-HOBBY FRONT ROW STARTERS GARRY JOHNSON AND COREY CRESSWELL WOULD BRING THEM TO THE GREEN WITH CRESSWELL TAKING THE EARLY LEAD. CRESSWELL, JOHNSON AND BOOGER BROOKS WOULD ENTERTAIN THE CROWD WITH SOME FIERCE SIDE BY SIDE RACING. BROOKS WAS IN THIRD BUT DIDN'T WANT TO STAY BACK THERE. HE TRIED PASSING JOHNSON ON THE LOW SIDE BUT JOHNSON WAS PROTECTING THAT LINE. SO ON LAP #6 BROOKS THREW IT ALL TO THE WIND AND JUMPED TO THE HIGH SIDE. WELL HE FOUND THE TOP TO HIS LIKING IN HIS DAD'S FAMILAR #48 NOT ONLY WOULD HE PASS JOHNSON FOR SECOND BUT WOULD ALSO MOTOR AROUND CRESSWELL FOR THE LEAD. BUT IT ALL CAME TO A HALT WHEN ON LAP 12 THE LEADERS ALL TANGLED WITH THE LAP CAR OF SCOTTIE HOGAN BRINGING OUT THE CAUTION. BROOKS WOULD BE ABLE TO CONTINUE BUT JOHNSON HAD HEAVY PASSENGER SIDE DAMAGE AND WAS PUSHED TO THE PITS. BROOKS WOULD RESTART FROM THE LEAD AND NEVER LOOK BACK HIS WAS FOLLOWED BY CRESSWELL, DUSTIN CANSLER, STEVE TATE AND DONNIE JOHNSON. WITH THE CLOCKS BARELY AT 10PM WE HAD TWO MORE FEATURES TO GO, FIRST OUT THE STEEL HEADED LATE MODELS. WITH SEVERAL DRIVERS PULLING DOUBLE DUTY RUNNING IN BOTH THE CRATE AND STEEL HEADED LATE MODEL EVENTS, RICK HIXSON AND TODD MORROW WOULD BRING THE FIELD TO THE GREEN. OUTSIDE POLESITTER JAMIE PERRY WOULD NOT MAKE THE CALL TO THE GREEN AFTER SUFFERING ENGINE TROUBLE AT THE END OF HIS HEAT RACE. THE EARLY BATTLE WOULD COME FROM HIXSON, MORROW, ANDY MILLER AND JASON WELSHAN. BUT ON LAP 10 WELSHAN WOULD NEED A HOOK TO TAKE HIS BROKEN RIDE TO THE PITS AFTER MAKING CONTACT WITH THE LAPPED CAR DRIVEN BY LARRY HIGGINS EXITING TURN 4. IN TOOK ONLY TWO MORE LAPS BEFORE THE CAUTION WAS FLYING ONCE AGAIN FOR THE SPINNING CRAIG BURROWS. THIS WAS HIS SECOND AND HE WOULD BE RETIRED TO THE INFIELD WITH THE TWO SPIN RULE. HIXSON WOULD WIDEN HIS LEAD OVER MORROW IN THE CLOSING LAPS TAKING THE VICTORY. FOLLOWING HIXSON ACROSS THE CHECKERED WAS MORROW, ANDY MILLER, RONNIE JOHNSON AND ROGER DICKSON. WITH THE LAST FEATURE OF THE NIGHT IT WOULD BE ON THE LAST LAP THAT THE FIREWORKS WOULD FLY. IN THE FWD TOMMY HUGHES TOOK HIS EARLY LEAD AS SEEMED TO HAVE EVERYTHING UNDER CONTROL UNTIL THE LAST LAP LAST TURN MOVE OF THE YOUNGSTER JAMES DYKES BANKING OFF HUGHES AND GOING ON TO TAKE THE VICTORY. HUGHES WOULD FINISH A DISAPPOINTED SECOND. BUT AT THE END A GREAT TIME WAS HAD BY ALL. THE FEATURE WINNERS ALL WERE BROUGHT TO THE FRONT STRTECH FOR THE FANS TO HAVE SOME UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL TIME WITH THEIR FAVORITE DRIVERS. RACING WAS OVER BY 10:30 GREAT JOB BY THE STAFF OF BOYDS SPEEDWAY.

MASON & HIXSON RIVERBEND REPEAT OFFENDERS: SEWELL #1 GET's THE JOB DONE at BOYD's
story by: Chuck Christopher
pics by: Jerry Bowen (www.actionshotsetc.com)

Chattanooga/Ringgold (6/11/10) --- Weekly racing took place at BOYD's SPEEDWAY as Chattanooga's Riverbend kicked off downeown Friday night with the Main Stage hosting Sheryl Crow. At 9:30 the regular racers showed up to do their own hit of "All I Wanna Do" RACE! But as the evening began a brief shower dropped a few rain drops onto the racing facilities just before the gates open to help settle the dust that would soon be raised again by the racers in all divisions. First up would be the CRATE LATE MODELS for the first of two Heats racing events. Points leader Robbie Mason would start from the pole and would take the early lead, but would be challenged by the #23 Craig Burrows the entire race. A mid-race caution that would see the cars of David Tindell, Micheal Combs and Aaron Wilson recieve heavy damage in a turn 2 mishap. All three cars would be sent to the pits for repairs. Mason would go on to win followed by Burrows and Todd Morrow. In Race #2 Curtis Cline would bring the field to the green while Jimmy Webb piloting the #B4 would quickly move into second. They would run all 10 laps in that order while the #3 driven by Jerry Coffman would finish third. The next group to the race track would be the A-HOBBY Division. Polesitter Scottie Hogan would lead the way only to see that familiar #148 Booger Brooks take that lead away on the second lap and go on to win followed by Chuck Cooper and Steve Tate. Corey Cresswell was making his way to the front only to make contact with Hogan and cut a right rear tire and pull to the pits. In Heat Race #2 someone forgot to tell the 7R of Rusty Caraway that to run this heat you would need a number 2 or number 3 on your car. The J3 of Gary Johnson would start from the pole and lead until the 7th lap when he was passed by the #3 of Donnie Johnson. Johnson (#3) would win followed by Johnson (#J3) and Jeff McKenzie (#J2). In the STEEL-HEATED LATE MODEL heats Rueben Mayfield would grap the early lead only to see it rustled away on lap #6 by the veteren driver of Rick Hixson in his #16. Hixson was followed by Mayfield and Andy Miller #17M. The second Heat race got a little more interesting. As the #07 of Jason Cardwell jumped to the early lead the race between the cars of #124 Jason Welshan and #1 of Brad Lowe was just heating up. Cardwell held the lead followed by Welshan until lap 6 when Brad Lowe made a daring move in turn 1 that didn't set well with Welshan. Lowe drove deep into the corner on the bottom only to slam into Welshan knocking him up the track and into third. The top three finishers were Cardwell, Lowe and Welshan. The last Heats of the night were for the FWD class. James Dykes would take the win over Tommy Hughes and Matt Patton. And in the second Heat Race #K88 Derrick Forgey would win over Hudgins and Richard Hickman.

It was now Feature time and remember when I said the dust was settled early by rain drops well it was about to get a little dustier at the 1/3 mile clay oval. The B-HOBBY'S were called to the race track for their nightly feature race. But as the race started it was only stopped for a Red Flag incident involving a fan that had been overcome by the heat and humity in the back pit stands and the medical personnel was called to the area. As the racing resumed Mike Chapman would take the early lead, but on lap 5 the second Red Flag incident would occur. This time it would involve the cars driven by Brandon Armitage and Lee Hogan. As Armitage was trying to enter the back side pits he cut in front of Hogan and the two hit the inside back wall sending both cars into the air. The Medical Personnel was called to check both drivers out to make sure they were OK. Both drivers survived the incident, but their cars didn't fair as well. Both cars were hauled to the infield where they would sit for the rest of the evening. Alvin Sewell would take the win followed by Mike Chapman, Hughes and Tim Totherow. Next up was the CRATE LATE MODELS, as Robby Mason and Curtis Cline would bring the full field to the green, Cline would spin in turn 2 collecting the field behind him. Several cars had to be brought to the front stretch for repairs while several cars nights were over due to heavy damage. Those cars included Kenny Kizzar, Scott Franks and Scott Ohms. When the racing continued Mason would take the early lead and never look back. With several late cautions to bunch the field up, Mason was still able to hold off a hard-charging Craig Burrows and Todd Morrow for his second win of the year. Rounding out the top five was David Tindell and Jerry Coffman. The A-HOBBY'S were up next, this time the action would be in front of the front sitting fans. A race track blocking crash that took several cars out early on lap #1 give the front fans something to look at up close. When the dust had settled and the dirt had been thrown (to cover up the fluids) the cars of Jeff McKenzie, Scottie Hogan, Dewayne Davis, Rust Caraway and Tim Durham were sent to the pits with heavy damage. Some of those cars would return later to complete a few laps. Booger Brooks would take the win followed by Donnie Johnson and Corey Cresswell. The STEEL-HEADED LATE MODELS were called to the track, but before the track personnel did a little tire checking before the cars were allowed onto the track. As the race began Rick Hixson would take the early lead followed by Jason Cardwell and Brad Lowe. On lap #2 Lowe would work his way around Cardwell into second and set his sites on the #16 of Hixson. But seeing him and passing him is two different things, he could only challenge him briefly until the two started working the lapped traffic. Once in the lapped traffic Hixson began to pull away and never looked back. Hixson would go onto win followed by Lowe, Cardwell, Welshan and Andy Miller. The last event of the night would be the Feature for the FWD (we thought). As the field was taking the green flag off of turn 4 the frontstretch bank of lights went out. The breaker had tripped and had to be reset. So thanks to Rick Hixson and his wife they brought their winning #16 racecar to the frontstretch and the gates were opened to allow kids and adults an up close and personal look of a winning race car. As the lights were resetting Hixson and Alvin Sewell signed autographs and kids were allowed to crawl and sit inside their racecars. When racing resumed James Dykes would take the lead followed by Tommy Hughes and Derrick Forgey. But on lap #11 Hughes and Forgey would get together sending Hughes into the outside wall ending his night. It took a few track officials to settle the tempers of Hughes as the field pass by under caution. Dykes would take the win followed by Hudgins, Michael Arp, Richard Hickman and Matt Patton. The racing activities were finally over for the evening, but not before each Feature Winner was ask to come to the front for a up close and personal time with the fans. A SPECIAL THANKS go out to each of them, Rick Hixson, Robby Mason, Booger Brooks, Alvin Sewell and James Dykes for allowing the fans that time. Racing was completed before 10:30 good job by the crew of Boyd's Speedway. Remember open practice Tuesday night 6:30-9:30. NO RACING NEXT WEEK. ENJOY THE TIME WITH YOUR FAMILIES.

BILLY OGLE JR. SUCCESSFULLY DEFENDS GEORGIA MEMORIAL TITLE... NARROWLY WINS $3,000

story by: STEVE HIXSON
photo's by: JERRY BOWEN (www.actionshotsetc.com)

Ringgold/Chattanooga (5/28/10) --- Despite threatening skies and thunderstorms in the area BOYD's SPEEDWAY owners went head-on with the scheduled Volunteer Racing Series "GEORGIA MEMORIAL" race Friday night and the fans were treated to mucho-denero action. Thirty (30) Super Late Model raceteams from around the area, signed-in for the 40 lap, $3,000 to-WIN 2nd annual event and in the end it was Billy Ogle Jr. (narrowly - by a quarter of a lap) successfully defending his 2009 GA MEMORIAL Title, holding off Ronnie Johnson at the checkers. "The rear axle let go & broke in turn four as I was set coming to the checkers", commented Ogle from JODY MILLARD PEST CONTROL Victory Lane. "I'd like to have been able to race Randy (Weaver) to the finish, but he was strong." Ogle continued, thanked sponsors of his #201 "Grady & King Construction, Kilby Equipment, PBM Performance Products, Calhoun's Restaurant" sponsored Competition Race Engines / GRT and friends including car owner Mike Kittrell. "We really like this place and look forward to returning, they've got a good track here." Ogle concluded thanking the fans for sticking it out despite the weather.

Qualifying saw THE MILKMAN Mike weeks turn the fastest lap clocking a 13:536 which is just over 3:10's off the track record, set by Ogle at the 09' event. Weeks would put the #22 "West Haven Speed Equipment, Outlaw Racing Graphics" sponsored Pro-Power / Trak-Star racecar on the pole of the 1st of 3 heats, but it would be Randy THE DREAM Weaver taking the lead and win from the outside front-row. Tommy Kerr would settle for 3rd behind the leaders of the 8 lap race, with Mike Hill and Todd Morrow transferring. Heat #2 saw Ogle win over 2nd quick qualifier Brett Wyatt and his #17 "Wyatt Builders, Chris Miller Painting, AutoZone" sponsored Race Engine Design / MasterSbilt machine. Behind Ogle and Wyatt it would be Derek Ellis, Anthony Burroughs and Jamie Perry transferring.

Heat 3 saw the same as RJ bulletted from his CAT-BIRD's SEAT off the outside front row taking the win in his #5 "Simmons Lawn Care, Miller Bros Coal, Koontz Plumbing & Construction Vinson Race Engines sponsored 525CT Crate Motored / MasterSbilt racecar. Jason Welshan would finish 2nd followed by Jeff Smith, Skip Arp and Aaron Ridley. Before the 22 starting field would see green, the B-Main Last Chance consi. took to the track. Chad Ogle beat Darrick York in the 10 lapper. TJ Alford finished third with Rick Hixson and Brian Hickman rounding out the transferees. Ross White and Kayne Hickman needed to use V.R.S Provisionals to start on the final row of the feature. Drivers failing to make the "A" Main feature race included; Jeff Fortner, Rodney Weeks, Anthony White, JJ Templeton, Ray Jarnigan and Bobby Giffen.

With the redraw, it would be Ogle and Johnson bringing the field to green. Johnson already had 25 green flag feature laps under his belt, winning the $1,000 to-WIN Steel-Head race 30 minutes prior to the start of the GEORGIA MEMORIAL. Ogle took command oddly enough from the Pole leaving Johnson reeling back to 4th on the OPENING BELL. Perry and R. White would end their night by the lap 3, first caution. Then K. Hickman and York collided on lap 7 to slow the field again early. Weaver began working on Ogle as RJ collected back 3rd from Weeks, whom had his hands full of ROCKETBOY. Kerr kept up the pressure as 10 green flag lap clicked off, leaving fans to watch the battle for 4th as well as keeping an eye on THE DREAM Weaver.

Using back-marker traffic to his advantage Weaver stepped thru a slightly opened door and took the lead on lap 17. Back in the pack Ellis, Wyatt and Arp were battling as C. Ogle reared a solo caution avoiding a stalling racecar. With Weaver leading Ogle Jr. had all kinds of pressure from RJ as Kerr motored just behind him in the #4T "Blount Motorsports, Insurance Partners, Arnold Trucking, Stowers CAT Rental" sponsored Custom Racing Engines / Rocket. Seemingly Weaver race to lose, that'd be just what happened as the leader stalled on lap 29 in turn 2, with a broken frontend. With the inherit lead Ogle Jr. knows its Johnson's move and the two ensue a high-speed chess match, with Ogle blocking every move. With 5 lap to-go RJ takes his shot and makes a BONSAI slyder move against Ogle off turn 4. With the collective conscience all his fans drawing a deep breathe, Johnson bid on lap 35 comes up short and Ogle stolls to the checkers half-a-straightaway ahead.

MEMORIAL CLASH: RJ WINS STEEL-HEAD LM's

story by: Chuck Christopher

With rain showers all around the Chattanooga area this afternoon many racers were surprized when theY rolled into the Speedway only to see that it hadn't rained a drop. The racing gods had looked down on the fans and racers alike and gave us the beautiful weather. Many racers fearing the showers would come decided to arrive late. When the driver's meeting was called a full field of cars was on hand. Before we could get started we had to find a way to remove the roller packer that had stalled on the backstretch. The wreckers were no match for the heavy piece of equipment. But just as luck would appear it started and was driven off the track. First out would be the A-HOBBY HEATS, the #1st of Steve Tate would not make the call to the track. This would let the #17P Jesse Perdon and #3 Donnie Johnson lead to the green. Johnson would go on to win followed by Corey Cresswell and Perdon. But after a post race inspection Perdon would be moved to the rear of the feature. In HEAT #2 it didn't take Booger Brooks long to get to the front of the field for yet another win coming front dead last. He was followed by Gary Johnson and Blake Armitage. In the STEEL HEADED LATE MODELS HEAT #1 Jason Welshan #124 would lead from the pole and never look back. A good battle behind him between Andy Miller, Brian Jackson and Jamie Perry would be fun to watch. When those cars began to lap the field the T22 of Perry would miss judge and loose control in turn 4 spinning to bring out the caution. Welshan would win followed by B4 Brian Jackson, and 17M Andy Miller. In HEAT RACE #2 it would be the veterans of Ronnie Johnson and Rick Hixson that would delight the fans with some much wanted side by side racing. But first we had to clean up the totally destroyed race car of #P14 Pat Castleberry. When Mr. Castleberry tried to slide between the 11 Mark Haddon on the backstretch the two made contact sending the P14 on the ride of his life. The red and white car flipped several times end over end and side to side down the backstretch before coming to rest on all four wheels. Mr. Castleberry was fine but the car was a total lose. When racing resumed the two veterans passed leader Jerry Coffman one on the high side and the other on the bottom leaving Mr. Coffman scratching his head wondering where they came from. Johnson would go on to win followed by Hixson and Coffman.

The first FEATURE of the evening would see the B-HOBBY DIVISION roll into place for their FEATURE ONLY race. The earlier leader would be the #2 Mike Chapman followed by #21 Lebron Miller. But on lap 10 the mechanical bug would hit the field sending the cars of Miller, Irvin, BJ Wilson all to the pits. On the next lap the hard racing between Brandon Francis and Steve King would see Francis' evening come to a crashing halt as he rode the front stretch wall coming to a rest in turn one. Chapman would go onto to survive and take the victory over Steve King, Hughes, Johnston and Shrader. With 16 cars taking the green the #00 of Rueben Mayfield would pull to the infield as the cars were taking the green flag. Polesitters Welshan and Johnson would lead them to the green. Ronnie Johnson would take the early lead from the outside while the #16 Rick Hixson would pass Welshan on lap 3 for second. These two would take up right where they left off in their earlier heat races battling side by side lap after lap. But even Mr. Johnson had his moments when the Y7 of Stephine Powell would spin in turn two and collect Johnson. Johnson would be awarded his position back and never look back from there. Ronnie would take the $1000 to win FEATURE followed by Rick Hixson, Jason Welshan, Brian Jackson and Jamie Perry. The A-HOBBY FEATURE was up next and would see the same results as polesitter Booger Brooks lead flag to flag. He was followed by Corey Cresswell, Gary Johnson, Dustin Cansler and Steve Tate. A lap 13 crash between the second place runner of Donnie Johnson and lapped car of William Phillips would bring some excitement to the race ending Johnson's and Phillips' evening. The final Feature of the night would be for the FWD Division. The earlier leader would be the A1 Derrick Forgey until lap 5 when the lap car of #48 Mark Arp was called for intentional spinning the leader coming off turn 4. Mr. Arp was sent to the corner(pits) for the rest of the evening. Forgey would go on to take the victory over James Dykes, Michael Arp. # 53 (Driver's Name Unkown) and Mark Aikins. Once again a full night of racing ( NO RAIN---ALL DONE BY 11:00 pm) Great job by the Drivers, Crews and especially the staff of Boyd's Speedway.

EARLY FINISHES: BURROWS & COLLINS GET 1st WINS

story by: Chuck Christopher

Chattanooga/Ringgold (5/14/10) --- After last weeks races that saw caution flags fly early and often tonight was just the opposite. Before several late entries into the B-Hobby division it was decided that they would run a Feature Only night. So the first Heats of the night went to the CRATE LATE MODELS. In HEAT #1 #91 Heath Hindman would take the early lead until the A1 of Kenny Kizzar would bring out the early caution that would end his heat race winning hopes. On lap 5 Hard Charging #23 Craig Burrows would rustle the lead away and go on to take the checkered followed by Hindman and #77 Dustin Golden. In HEAT #2 Polesitter #111 David Tindell had things under control and seem sure to lead the field to the finish, but a late caution on lap 7 saw the #R76 go for a wild ride. Entering turn 2 he found himself not exiting turn 3 but instead sitting on his top as he had flipped exiting the turn. He would crawl out of his car OK, but the car was not so good. When racing got back under way Tindell would lead #16 Anthony White and #87 Kevin Gibson to the checkered. Next out would be the A-HOBBY Division for the first of two heats. In HEAT #1 Patrick Wilson would lead the field to the green flag, but before we could complete a lap the #15 Scottie Hogan and #7R Rusty Caraway tangle exiting turn 2. This would end Caraway's chances of winning due to heavy front end damage. Several others would go on to have some difficulties but not Mr. Wilson as he would easily win over #12 Corey Cresswell and #17P Jesse Perdon. In HEAT #2 the familar #148 Booger Brooks got back on track and easily won over #37 Chuck Cooper and #8 Dennis Moore. The call went out to the STEEL HEADED LATE MODELS to bring their machines to the racing surface. Outside polesitter of #63 Josh Collins would jump to the early lead and lead flag to flag for his first heat race victory. The D11 of Davy Davis exited early with chassis problems on lap #3. Collins was followed by #T22 Mike Tinker and T6 Todd Hernandez. In HEAT #2 the cagey veteran of #16 Rick Hixson would lead the field to the green, but would be pushed by the #124 piloted by Jason Welshan. Andy Miller would make a last lap pass of Welshan to take second and Welshan would settle for third. The last of the nights HEATS would bring the FWD to the speedway. In HEAT #1 the familar number T9 of Tommy Hughes would finish first followed by J7 James Dykes and Derrick Forgey. In HEAT #2 The battle would be between H20 Hunter Boyd and 78 Micheal Arp for the lead. Arp would finish ahead followed by Boyd and Brad Cross.

With FEATURE RACES rolling to the Speedway very few people could believe it was still daylight. It was now the B-HOBBY Division to bring their racing machines to the frontstretch for the first time tonight. As the field rolled to the green flag the #8 Brandon Francis would take the early lead. On laps number 7 and 8 we would have cautions for the spins of cars #J2, #2, #30, #1. The worst would be for second place runner #8 Jimbo Breland's spin exiting turn 4 while running in second place. A late race tangle between the #30 Jonathon Sims and #14 Lee Hogan would bring the fans to their feet. Brandon Francis would take the checkered flag followed by #07 Steve King, #1 Alvin Sewell ( who fought back after a lap 8 spin), #8 Breland and #2 Chapman. Next out would be THE CRATE LATE MODELS, Heat 1 race winner Craig Burrows would lead the field to the green and would lead early and often. Because on this night he looked to be untouchable. With almost a caution free race only #16 of Anthony White had a chance to challenge. A good side-by-side race between #17M Kenneth Sweatt amd #72 Robby Mason would keep the race interesting. But on this night it would be all Mr. Burrows followed by Anthony White, #87 Kevin Gibson (only to be 8 lbs light at the scales), #111 David Tindell and #72 Robby Mason. Up next A-HOBBY with polesitter Wilson and Brooks bringing the field to the green it wouldn't take long before the yellow flag would fly. Because on the start cars #8, #15 and #J2 would get together down the backstretch ending their night. Racing would restart only to see the caution fly again for #12 Corey Cresswell on lap #3 ending his night. Brooks would take the early lead followed by Wilson until lap 8 when Wilson would also enter the pits with mechanical problems ending his night also. On lap 13 the H31 driven by Johnny Huff would spin for the second time and be required to end his night as well with the 2 spin rule. Brooks would visit Victory Lane once again followed by Chuck Cooper, a late charging Jeff Paige, Steve Tate and last place starter Scottie Gravitt racing from 19th to 5th. The STEEL HEADED LATE MODELS rolled to the frontstretch for the start of their 25 lap $1000 to Win Feature race. Polesitters Collins and Hixson would bring the field to the green. Taking the early lead would be the #16 Rick Hixson, the caution would fly on lap 13 for Jeff smith coming to a halt entering turn 3. The retart would see Hixson take the green in front of Collins only to bring out his own caution of lap 15 with a broken rearend. This would put #63 Josh Collins on the point with 17M Andy Miller close behind. Josh Collins would go on to take his FIRST VICTORY OF THE YEAR followed by Miller, Jason Welshan, #79 Dewayne Powell (making his first appearence this year at Boyd's Speedway) and rounding out the top five would be young #11 Lee Gray. The last race of the evening would bring the FWD to the racing surface and see a great battle between T9 Tommy Hughes and 78 Micheal Arp racing door to door. The two would swap the lead back and forth several times only to see Arp take the checkered in front of Hughes, Forgey, Cross and Hudgins. The evening racing was over and to everyone's surprize it was just 9:55. With the early evening everyone was able to pack up and head to the Waffle House. Great Racing and a Great Job by the staff and RACERS of Boyd's Speedway.

SKIPPER TAKES CARE OF S.R.R.S CASTAWAY's WINS BOYD's

Chattanooga/Ringgold (5/7/10) --- The SKIPPER Skip Arp of nearby Georgetown, Tennessee was the class of the field Friday night for the 2nd Annual "MAYHEM SHORTY 40" Southern Regional Racing Series presented by PPM Racing Products. At racetime thirty-three (33) Super Late Models from TN, GA, AL and NC had signed in for the $3,000 to-WIN, 40 lap event. Early on Arp seemed to be the dominant racer as the #31 "Stanley Best Heating & Air, Curtis Equipment Sales, Skip Arp Performance, Mid-Nite Oil Racing Fuels, Merriman Excavating" sponsored GRT / Smith-built Spec Motor powered racecar, set early fast time during PRECISION PRODUCTS INC. time trials. Arp's 14:104 wouldn't stand as the MILKMAN Mike Weeks backed-up his earlier season fast lap setting a 13:963 in his # 22 "West Haven Speed Equipment" sponosored Trakstar / Race Engine Design powered racecar.

Qualifying locked-in the Top 3 from each Group, so... behind Weeks and Arp were; Ray Cook & Anthony Burroughs, Derek Ellis & Mark Vineyard, Brett Wyatt & Ronnie Johnson and current S.R.R.S points leader Jacob Grizzle, Three (3) Last Chance races would take to the track, setting the remaining transferees for the A-Main feature. In B-Main #1 Jake Knowles piloting the #66 "CarSmart Auto Sales, Cleveland Speedway Driving School, Cruise with the Champions" MasterSbilt / R.E.D machine would take the win. Thus earning him the 10th overall starting position next to Grizzle. Josh Putnam would win B-Main #2, while ROCKETBOY Tommy Kerr would make up, row 6 for the feature, winning the 3rd and final B-Main in the #4T "Blount Excavating, Explosive Specialists, Arnold Trucking" sponsored Rocket / Custom Race Engines machine. Using S.R.R.S provisionals were a pair of Middle TN racers; 2009 series champ Jay Brinkley and Steven Ashby.

With a late start time the field staged quickly on the front straight-away. Weeks and Arp would bring the field to green only to have a lap 1 caution when the field became stacked as Skylar Marlar, Freddy and Jeff (of no relation) Smith, Mike Tinker and Rick Hixson all got tangled up. As the field took a lap 1 restart, Arp was in the lead with Weeks, Cook (who'd just won the Crate LM feature), Grizzle and Vineyard following. All that would quickly change when, just after a minimal lap 3 caution, Weeks would stack the field, this time, on the front straight-away. With the FQ outta the picture, as well as Putnam, the field began to unravel. Try after try to get consecutive green flags failed as yellows seem prominant. With almost ten (10) racecars out by lap 10 it would be Arp, Cook, Burroughs, Ronnie Johnson with Kerr coming fast from his 12th starting spot.

Burroughs would end his Top 5 run as RJ would bring out a caution in turn 2. ROCKETBOY would make quick work of Grizzle and Jake Knowles on the restart before settling in behind Cook for 3rd. Scott Creel and Tony Morris' runs would end prematurely as the SKIPPER kept the lead with Cook drifting between 2 and 4 car lengths back. The Top 3 (31-53-4T) would dance for about 20 circuits off & on as Marlar and Todd Morrow would designate yellow periods along with a struggling RJ. The races final yellow would appear just 4-laps from the finish, allowing Cook & Kerr to keen up on the wheel for one-last attempt on Arp. Grizzle in the #99G "Rick's Rentals, Kate's Marathon" sponsored MasterSbilt / Brown Engineering racecar and Knowles duked it out for 5th just ahead of Brinkley, Jamie Perry and a hard chargin Johnson.

Cook in the # 53 "Arvil Cook Property Investments, D&R Motorsports, Angie Hickson Contracting, A+ Moving & Storage" MasterSbilt / R.E.D ride would be 2nd as Arp headed to Jody Millard Pest Control victory lane. "We had a really good car all-night" stated Arp, catching his breathe after climbing from the racecar. Thanking his sponsors he stated that the new Spec Motor (from Stealth Carburators) made the difference. "I've never been a fan of the Spec, but tonight Tony and the guys convinced me. If it weren't for them we wouldn't be here for sure." Unfortunately the A-Hobby and FWD divisions didn't get to race, due to time restraints (curfew), so those two divisions will run for double purse, next Friday night (May 14th) at Boyd's Speedway. For more info. on the track, visit www.boydsspeedway.com online. The Volunteer Racing Series Super Late Models return for another $3,000 to-WIN race Memorial Day Weekend, Friday May. 28th.

COOK & CHAPMAN TAKE LOCAL DIVISION FEATURES

by: Chuck Christopher

Chattanooga/Ringgold (5/7/10) --- Before the SLM's would take the track we had the Heats in the every competitive local divisions. First out was the B-HOBBY IN THE FIRST OF TWO HEATS, with Steve King leading the way to the green he would be passed early by #8 Brandon Francis and #14 Joe Johnson. Johnson would go on to take the Heat Victory followed by Steve King and Daniel Johnston. In the Second Heat the other #8 of Jimbo Breland would take the early lead but would get passed on the last lap by #2 Mike Chapman. Chapman would go on to take his Heat Victory followed by #8 Breland and #B12 Buck Hoffman. Then this is where the night gets exciting, THE CRATE LM's were called to the track for the first of the two Heats races. With nine cars taking to the track for the first heat race, the first attempt at a green was a short lived experience. With #22 Bobby Mayse and #37 Chuck Cooper bringing the field to the green a major crash in turn one and two would see the cars of Mayse, #72 Robby Mason and #007 Hunter Best heading to the pits, with Mayse taking the worse end of the deal. On the next restart it didn't take long for the #3 Jerry Coffman to jump to the early lead. Coffman would go on to take the Heat Victory followed by #16 Ray Cook (pulling the Double Duty) and #27 James Gamble. In Heat #2 things settle down just a bit and #87 Kevin Gibson would lead flag to flag followed by #23 Craig Burrows and #A-1 Kenny Kizzar. Next out would be the A-HOBBY's with #17 Cliff Webb starting from the pole and the #P2 of Jeff Paige failing to answer the call on the outside pole. Early contact would cause the #148 Booger Brooks to cut a rear tire and exit the track for repairs. The #F7 of Jason Forester would have his engine let go and the track would need several minutes to cover the oil with fresh dry dirt before racing resumed. When the race ended we would have only three cars survive. The #12 Corey Cresswell was followed by #15 Scottie Hogan and # 69 Thomas Cagle. In Heat Race #2 Jeff McKenzie found the winning to his liking. Following up last weeks Heat Race Win he would finish first again this week followed by #37 Blake Armitage and Hard Charging #17P Jesie Peardon. In the final Heats of the evening the FWD would take to the racing surface and see the #K88 Derrick Forgey finish first followed by #31 Michael Arp and #J7 James Dykes. In the second heat #T9 Tommy Hughes took another victory over #48 Mark Arp and #5 Shane Hatfield.

It was now FEATURE TIME up first would be the B-HOBBY DIVISION the #14 Joe Johnson and #2 Mike Chapman bringing the field to the green Chapman would take the early lead. He appeared to be on cruise control but a caution for the #77 BJ Wilson and the large amount of oil placed all the way around the track would bunch the field up for the restart. But on this night Mr. Chapman would be up to the challenge and take the FEATURE WIN followed by #14 Joe Johnson, #07 Steve King, #8 Jimbo Breland and #1 Alvin Sewell. Before we could get started the track needed to make a few repairs to the tracks electronics that had been broken during a late race crash involving the 22L Mike Lewelling. Mike had tried to see how well his car would race from the top of the front stretch wall. The CRATE LATE MODELS were taking their starting position for their nights Feature while the repairs were being made. The 17 car field would see Jerry Coffman and Kevin Gibson bring them to the green flag. Gibson would take the early lead but on lap 6 Craig Burrows would take the lead away from Gibson. With the racing 3 and 4 wide throughout the field, Mr. Ray Cook was just sitting back waiting on his turn. With the heated racing throughout and the contact between drivers the fans were on their feet. On lap 14 Ray Cook said its my time to lead and that he did passing the #23 of Burrows on the high side. He would not look back from that point and would take his FIRST CRATE LATE MODEL VICTORY of the year at Boyd's Speedway. Craig Burrows would go on to finish second and a late contested pass by A1 Kenny Kizzar over Kevin Gibson would leave him third. Rick Hixson would finish fourth and Josh Collins would round out the top five. With all the cautions the Features for the A-HOBBY and FWD classes were postponed until next week. BOYD'S SPEEDWAY has become a great place to watch good side by side racing and tonight was no exception.

ANOTHER SET: 1st BOYD's WINNERS: BRINDLE & WELSHAN

story by: Chuck Christopher

(Chattanooga/Ringgold) 4/30/2010 --- With heavy rains threatening the area once again for this weekend BOYD's SPEEDWAY would open its doors to a packed house. With nearly 90 cars signed in to compete on the 3/8 mile clay oval the racing action got under way with the B-HOBBY HEATS. In the first of two HEATS the 4X of Jason Pierce would start from the pole but would only see not one but two #7 pass him for the top spots. The #7 of Brandon Armitage would finish first followed by #7 Daniel Johnston, 4X Jason Pierce would finish third. In the second HEAT #48 Lee Harbon would take the checkered followed by #77 BJ Wilson and B12 Buck Hofman. Next onto the 3/8 mile clay oval would be the always competitive CRATE LATE MODELS in the first of two HEATS. James Gamble would start from the pole position but would have to wait until lap three before taking the lead away from Weston Gantte. Kenny Kizzar A-1 would cross the line second and 23 Craig Burrows would follow in third, but the 23 of Burrows would be placed at the rear of the feature for a tire that was checked soft. In HEAT #2 Chip Brindle and Kevin Gibson would start first and second and would finish that way while #72 of Robby Mason would start last and finish third. Next out was the A-HOBBY HEATS, Steve Bishop would start from the pole but would see the win go to #12 Corey Cresswell followed by #3 Gene Dover and #72 Patrick Wilson. In HEAT #2 the surprize was the J2 of Jeff McKenzie starting from the pole and holding on to take his first HEAT VICTORY over Steve Tate and #148 Booger Brooks. The STEEL HEAD LATE MODELS were called to the track for the first of two of their HEATS. In HEAT #1 and early caution for the crash involving #71,#14 and #5 in turn 2 would later see the #16 Rick Hixson pass T6 Todd Hernandez on lap 4. After their side by side racing he would go on to gain the win and the pole position for the nights feature event. He was followed to the checkered by T6 Todd Hernandez and 22L Mike Lewelling. In HEAT #2 it would be almost a repeat of the first with a early caution on lap #1 the red flag would be displayed for the crash on the #302 Robert Stutts, #357 Brian Hooks, #H3 Kayne Hickman, #55 Brad Allen, #4 Justin Litchford and D11 of Davy Davis. This would end the race for Brad Allen and Justin Litchford with heavy front end damage. When racing resumed the #29 Jason Welshan would take the victory followed by T21 David Tinker and 00 Jeff Smith. The last heats of the evening would bring the FWD's to the speedway. The T9 of Tommy Hughes would hold off #20 Hunter Boyd and V20 Brad Cross for his heat win. In Heat #2 the #31 Michael Arp would pass his way to the front followed by Derrick Forgey and Matt Patton.

Everyone was ready for the money races, each driver had had his turn onto the 3/8 mile clay oval during heats to see what adjustments were needed to improve their cars. First up would bring the B-HOBBY DIVISION to the speedway, but it would come very clear to all those that watched that this group didn't make all the right adjustments. With cautions early and often several cars would be unable to continue, some for mechanical issues. But as the race came to a close it would find the #77 of BJ Wilson taking his FIRST VICTORY of the year. He would be followed by #2 Mike Chapman and #7 Daniel Johnston. It was now the CRATE LATE MODELS turn to rumble in the dirt, with James Gamble and Chip Brindle starting from the pole they would lead the field to the green flag. But to their surprize the first lap would see the A-1 of Kenny Kizzar take the early lead. Kenny would have his hands full holding the entire field behind him for the next 19 laps. Kenny Kizzar would cross the finish line first for his FIRST VICTORY ( since moving up from the FWD DIVISION ). His victory would be short lived as the second place finisher of #38C Chip Briindle was place the money on the table to protest the victor. Kenny would refuse to tear down handing the victory to Chip Brindle ( FIRST VICTORY OF THE YEAR ). He would be followed by James Gamble, Jason MacMahan, Kevin Gibson and Robby Mason. Next out would be the A-HOBBY DIVISION and while many wondered if they had been talking too much with their B-HOBBY counterparts. As the A-HOBBY DIVISION would also see the cautions fly early and often. But the fans would not be disappointed as some of the best racing of the evening woud see the cars of Corey Cresswell, Booger Brooks and Patrick Wilson put on a show for the lead. For the last 8 laps of their feature you could have covered all three cars with a blanket. Racing three wide front one end of the track to the other no one really knew who would come out victorious. With Corey Cresswell holding the slight lead lap after lap it was Booger Brooks trying to be the spoiler. But as he made his move so did Patrick Wilson as Brooks tried to make the pass for the lead Patrick Wilson slid by them both to take the victory. Wilson would be followed by Brooks, Cresswell, Steve Tate and Jeff Paige. Everyone took a deep breath as the call was made to the pits for the STEEL HEADED LATE MODELS. With a full field of 27 cars getting ready to take to the racing surface the early heat cautions had taken three out for the evening. The 24 car field rolled to the green flag being led by Rick Hixson and Jason Welshan. Jason Welshan would take the early lead over Rick Hixson, but as the laps began to tick off Welshan would continue running the bottom of the track. Hixson must have watched the A-HOBBY division race and saw that you could run three wide around the smooth racing surface. So he jumped to the high side and little by little gain ground on Welshan. On lap 9 Hixson would take the lead away from Welshan only to get caught by slower traffic the next lap giving it back to Welshan. Hixson would not give up the fight continuing to run the top but would only watch as Jason Welshan would take the checkered flag in front of him. Welshan was followed by Hixson, David Tinker, Brad Lowe and Robert Stutts. The last feature of the night was for the FWD DIVISION. It would also see a great race between Hughes, Arp and Forgey battling side by side for the entire race. Arp seemed to have the race in hand only to have a flat right rear end his night four laps from the finish. At the end we would have yet another FIRST TIME VICTOR in Tommy Hughes. Hughes was followed by Forgey, Brad Cross, Matt Patton and Hunter Boyd. SUPER LATE MODELS invade BOYD's SPEEDWAY for the $3000 to win with the S.R.R.S. series.

HERNANDEZ, DOVER & MASON GET 1st BOYD's WINS

story by: Chuck Christopher

Chattanooga/Ringgold (4/23/10) --- Well with heavy rains forcasted throughout the area for this weekend a large crowd came to BOYD'S SPEEDWAY to get their weekly fix of the smell of racing fuel, mud sligging side by side racing. And believe me they were not disappointed. The evening started with the twin HEATS of the B-HOBBY class. In the first Bill King ( in the familiar # 14 of Lee Hogan ) would lead Daniel Johnston and Mike Chapman to the checkered flag. In the second Reagan Williams would battle Brandon Francis and Bill Pate for his victory. It was now time for the CRATE LATE MODELS to take to the track in the first of two HEATS. Last weeks hard charger Robby Mason driving his #72 started last and finished second was determined to start closer to the front this week. Starting from the pole in his respective heat he left no questions to where he would start this week. Mason would lead Craig Burrows and Jerry Coffman to the checkered. Last week Kenny Kizzar would start up front only to see the undefeated Rex Richey take the win. But this week Mr. Kizzar had done his homework and would not be denied his heat victory. He was followed by Bobby Mayse and Jason McMahan. The A HOBBY class was now up for the first of their two heats. Patrick Wilson would continue where he left off last week passing Corey Cresswell and Jeff McKinze for the win. In Heat #2 Gene Dover (subing for Garry Johnson in the black # 3) would lead Steve Tate and Booger Brooks to the finish. As the clouds began to roll in the STEEL HEADED LATE MODELS rolled to the track for the first of two HEATS. David Doss making his first appearence at Boyd's Speedway this year would start from the pole position, but would only be good enough for second as the B5 of Todd Hernadez would take the win while Rusty Vallenger would finish third. In HEAT #2 another first timer Mike Lewelling driving the #22L would start from the pole and lead the hard charging #16 of Rick Hixson ( who started from the back) to the checkered flag. Hixson was followed by Tunnel Hills, Davey Davis. The last of the heats would bring out the FWD's Tommy Hughes would finish in front of Derrick Forgey and Matt Patton. In the final heat race of the evening Micheal Arp beat Brad Cross and Mark Arp to the line.

In the nights first FEATURE the B-HOBBY class would prepare for the 15 lap duel for the money. With King and Williams leading the field to the green the caution would fly early. Williams would be out before the race really got going. The lead would be taken over by the #8 of Brandon Francis followed by Mike Chapman. A late entry into the field was making his way to the front the #1 driven by Mr. HUghes was on the move. By lap 6 he had taken the lead and went on to cross the line first. But as he crossed the scales he was determined to be light and was DQ'd which gave the victory to Mike Chapman (First Victory of the Year). He was followed by Bill King, Daniel Johnston,Alvin Sewell and Tim Totherow (making his first appearance of the year). The CRATE LATE MODELS were called to the front straightaway for their 20 lap feature. With every race this year being won by the # 16 of Rex Richey would this be the night for a first time winner. Robby Mason and Kenny Kizzar would lead the full field to the green. Mason would take the early lead followed by Kizzar. The caution would fly on lap 8 for the spin of the #87 of Kevin Gibson. As Mason continued to lead under green the racing was heating up back through the field. At one time Mayse, Coffman, Richey and Burrows would make it four wide down the back stretch all fighting for the same position. The fans were brought to their feet as Coffman would lead the group but could only follow the #72 of Mason to the checkered flag. Robby Mason had gained his FIRST VICTORY OF THE YEAR followed by Jerry Coffman, Rex Richey, Craig Burrows and Bobby Mayse. A-HOBBY was up next, would the Brooks be victorious again was the question. With Patrick Wilson starting up front could he continue his winning streak from last week. On lap three he was out handing the lead to #3 of Gene Dover he would never look back and take his FIRST VICTORY OF THE YEAR followed by Steve Tate, Corey Cresswell, Booger Brooks and Jeff Paige.

In the STEEL HEADED LATE MODEL would this be the night for another first time winner. Todd Hernadez would lead the full field to the green. Outside pole of # 22L Mike Lewelling taking the early lead. Lewelling took the high side to his liking while Mr. Hernadez began to inch his way on the bottom. For several laps running side by side Hernadez took the lead. As Hernadez seemed to gain more distance lap by lap the racing behind him continued to heat up. The veteran racer of #16 Rick Hixson was coming and coming hard. But before he could get to Hernadez he was being battled by the 17M of Andy Miller. With a late caution to close the field up for the restart could Hixson take advantage of the opportunity. Not on this night as Todd Hernadez would also Win FOR THE FIRST TIME. This would be Todd's first victory after moving from the A-HOBBY division he had dominated for several years. Following Todd would be Rick Hixson, Andy Miller, Jeff Smith and Jason Welsham. The last race of the evening would roll into position. The FWD early leader would be the T9 of Tommy Hughes, he would lead until lap #10 when he began to slow for a overheating problem. This would hand the lead over to Derrick Forgey, but the battle wasn't over. He was dogged high then low by the cars driven by Micheal Arp and Brad Cross. But he held on to take the victory over Arp, Cross, Matt Patton and Mark Arp. What a job the track had done to fully complete the entire racing program by 10:15 only to see the rain drops begin.

RONNIE JOHNSON WINS E.A. BOYD ANNIVERSARY CLASSIC

Chattanooga/Ringgold (4/16/10) --- The CHATTANOOGA FLASH Ronnie Johnson made it 2 for 2 Friday night at his home track, winning the inaugural Volunteer Racing Series event; The E.A. Boyd Anniversary Classic 40 lap $3,000 to-WIN feature at Boyd's Speedway. RJ piloting the familiar black # 5 "Miller Bros. Coal Inc., Simmons Lawn Care, American Billett, Transport One" sponsored MasterSbilt / Vinson Racing Engines, using SPEC motor power lead start to finish holding off charges by both Randy Weaver and North Georgia Motorsports fast qualifier Billy Ogle Jr. Setting fast time among the 28 entries, Ogle rocked the clock with a 14:492 which gave him the pole for Heat #1. The MILKMAN Mike Weeks went out of turn in qualifying after pre-qualifying tire check and offically turned a quicker time than Ogle Jr.(14:436), but VRS rules stipulate an out of turn qualifying lap deems a 50% +1 position time penality which set Weeks back to 13th on the grid.

Heat #1 Ogle held firm holding off Kentucky's Eric Wells and Weaver for the victory. RJ defeated the ranks of heat #2 that saw outside pole sitter William Thomas have trouble at the opening bell. Brandon Kinzer (also from KY) finished second with Vic Hill marking his Boyd's Speedway debut in 3rd. In heat #3 the POWELL PREDATOR Mark Vineyard defeated Rick Rogers. Local racer Jeff Smith also earned a transfer spot finishing 3rd. In the Last Chance consi. Jake Knowles took the win over Mike Marlar. The Fisher Paint, Body & Frame Shop redraw set Vineyard and Johnson as the FRONT ROW JOE starters winning the bonus $50. After two failed starts, both courtsey of Vineyard, Johnson set off on a torrid pace with Weaver making quick work of Kinzer, Hill and Wells, whom were all caught up in the early scuffles. Vineyard's first yellow went back to a complete restart, due to a pre-mature caution and Rogers was unable to continue after yellow #2.

As RJ showed the way Ogle Jr. slipped past Weaver for the runner-up spot, only to give it rite back a few laps later in heavy traffic. Johnson continued to distance himself from the pack, not even slowing up for back-marker traffic. Vineyard was settling for a strong top 5 after the disasterious starts as Wells and Hill battled for the final Top 5 finishing spot. Jeff Smith headed up the charge of local BOYD's BRUISERS that run weekly in the Steel-Head class. Jake Knowles studded the finish in 10th after starting 19th on the grid. Racers failing to make the field included; David Payne, Brian Hickman, Chris Noah, Ray Jarnigan, Denny Slayton and Jason Welshan. Boyd's Speedway will see Super Late Models return in three (3) weeks when the S.R.R.S. touring group sanctions the 2nd Annual MAYHEM SHORTY 40, Friday night May 7th. for a $3,000 to-WIN feature. Further info. on results from the local Boyd's Speedway classes will be posted later, here on the web-site.

RICHEY - WILSON - BROOKS & CROSS ALSO WINNERS

story by: Chuck Christopher

Chattanooga/Ringgold (4/16/10) --- First out on the track was the B-HOBBY in the first of two heat races. In race #1 Labron Miller started from the pole and never looked back. He would lead B.J. Wilson and Alvin Sewell to the checkered. In race #2 the very familiar green #48 of Ronnie Brooks would make quick work of the field and lead Mike Chapman and Daniel Johnson to the finish. Next out would be what has become maybe the most competitive class at Boyd's Speedway, The Crate Late Models. In the first of two heat races to determine the starting line-up for the evening feature would find the A1 of Kenny Kizzar lead the field to the green flag. But it would be a couple of ole cajun verterans that would close in on Mr. Kizzar. The undefeated #16 of Rex Richey starting from the outside third row wouldn't take long to be eating at the rear bumper of Kizzar. Rick Hixson would close in from his 7th place starting position to hold on to the third place finish. Richey would go on to win followed by Kizzar, Hixson, Coffman and Jason McMahan. In race #2 the #22 of Bobby Mayse would lead this group to the green. Mayse was soon battling a hard charging Craig Burrows for the top position. Burrows would go on to earn the outside pole starting position for the nights feature and was followed by Mayse, Gamble, Golden and Scott Ohms.

the A-HOBBY's would get their turn. In the first of two heat races the often challenged, but seldom beaten Booger Brooks would once again take the checkered followed by Steve Tate, Jessie Perdon ( who started from the rear) and the 15 year old rookie making his first ever race, Dakota Cannon. In race #2 Dewayne Wilson searching for his first Victory of the year would earn the outside pole starting position to be there to challenge pole sitter Booger Brooks. He was followed to the line by Gary Johnson, Jeff Paige and Corey Cresswell. Feature time was upon us and while the Late Models were making final adjustments the B-HOBBY's were brought to the forefront. Could ANYBODY beat that green #48 of Ronnie Brooks. With the Brooks family dominating the lower classes it would seem like tonight might be the night. With a starting rub between the polesitters of Brooks and Miller it would cut a tire down on the 48 of Brooks and he would have to pull to the pits for a new tire. With the field taking the green Brooks charged back onto the track as the crowd cheered. But he was in last place a half of a lap behind. Miller would take the early lead and seem to be own his way to his first victory. With a few late cautions to help close the field up, Brooks set his eyes on Miller. Miller would lead until at the end only to push in turn 4 and allow yes Brooks to take yet another victory. Brooks was followed by Chapman, Miller, BJ Wilson and Daniel Johnston.

The Crate Late Models were up next, again would anybody be able to defeat the #16 of Rex Richey whom has been perfect so far this year. Rex would start on the front row and appear to be on his way. The show was being put on by the #72 driven by last weeks second place finisher Robby Mason. After Mason struggled during his heat race he would start dead last, but when the green flew it was certain he wasn't struggling anymore. Tarting high then low passing anything and everything in his path Mason found himself eyeing the rear bumper of the #16 of Rex Richey. Yes he had past his way all the way to second. Richey would go on to win but Mason followed with Hixson, Burrows, Mayse and Kenny Kizzar rounding out the top five. Next up was the A-HOBBY, once again would tonight be the night for someone to beat one of the Brooks. With Ronnie Brooks already winning earlier it was now Booger Brooks' turn to see if he could remain undefeated. But on this night Dewayne Wilson, who finished second to Booger last week, said enough was enough. Wilson would win for the first time this season followed by Brooks, Johnson, Cresswell and Jeff Paige. The final race of the evening saw the FRONT RUNNERS race to the finish, Brad Cross would beat Micheal Arp, Tommy Hughes, Richard Hickman and Shawn Snider to the line. Great night of racing Thanks to All the Boyd's Speedway Staff for yet another wonderfull evening of Racing

SCOTT SEXTON WINS BOYD's

Boyd's Speedway Results 4-9-10
by: Chuck Christopher

Well with the cool air of spring all around it still couldn't cool off the heated battles at Boyd's Speedway tonight. With over 70 cars coming to challenge for the top prize in their respective classes, we started with a little humor at first. With Co-Owner Richard Harvey taking a brief stay as the Flagman while the full-time flagman was called to the scoring tower, someone said throw the yellow and he did just that, he threw the yellow. He could only stand and watch as the yellow flag landed on the dirt surface below. In the first of two B-HOBBY heats # 21 Labron Miller battled the #8 of Brandon Francis for the chance to start on the pole of their Featrure Race. Labron Miller held off Brandon Francis and the # 01 of Alvin Sewell. In HEAT RACE #2 everyone was wondering if anyone would have anything for the #48 of Ronnie Brooks, the question was answered early as Ronnie Brooks took command and went on the finish first followed by #77 BJ Wilson and #15 Jacob Stewart.

Next up would be the every competetive CRATE Division, Pole sitter #118 Todd Stadfford along side the #30 of Jerry Coffman they would bring the field to the green flag. Jerry Coffman took the early lead while the hard charging #72 of Robby Mason set his sites of the back bumper of the #30. But with two laps left the #99 driven by Todd Morrow spoiled the finish for Mr. Mason sending him back to third. In the second CRATE HEAT outside polesitter #23 Craig Burrows took the early lead only to see last weeks winner take that lead away on the third lap by #16 Rex Richey. They would go on to finish first and second followed by the #27 of James Gamble. In A HOBBY it saw the Brooks family take both wins in their Heats. With the son #148 Booger Brooks wining the first and father #48 Arva Brooks wining the second. Next up was the Top-Dogs the Steel-Headed Late Models, starting from the pole the #B5 of Todd Hernandez just said goodbye to the rest of the field. Outside polesitter #B4 of Brian Jackson would settle for second followed by the #17M of Andy Miller. In Heat Race #2 last weeks second place finisher #29 Jason Welshan would lead #00 Jeff Smith and T22 of Mike Tinker to the checkered flag. In the final Heats of the night Front-Runenrs was won by #H31 Micheal Arp and #53 of Matt Patton.

Now it was time for the money races to begin first up was the B-HOBBY Divisions, the #48 of Ronnie Brooks lead flag to flag over the #21 of Labron Miller, but it wasn't easy as everyone one else in the field took their turns bringing out the caution. While some were unable to continue everyone was scored with at least one spin-out. Ronnie Brooks would lead every lap followed by Miller and #1 of Alvin Sewell fighting his way back to third after his spin. Crate Late Models were called to the track with pollsitters Jerry Coffman and Rex Richey leading the way. While Rex Richey took the lead on lap 1 and never turned back making it two for two, Jerry Coffman saw the familiar #72 of Robby Mason pass him on lap 5 and then the #99 of Todd Morrow on lap 14. Richey would again visit Victory Lane followed by Mason, Morrow, Coffman and Burrows. A-HOBBY was up next with father and son starting from the front row. Son #148 Booger Brooks would lead Dad #48 of Arva Brooks to the green flag, but it was the # 72 of Patrick Wilson that would try to challenge the Brooks for the win. Then on lap 7 Arva Brooks would pull to the top of turn 4 with what appeared to be motor failure. That left the battle to Brooks and Wilson and third place finisher Steve Tate to battle to the checkered flag. Brooks would go on to take yet another victory followed by Patrick Wilson, Steve Tate, Corey Cresswell and #2 Forrest Gilfford.

With two races remaining at barely past 10 pm, the crowd came to the feet only to see a late entry pull to the race track for the STEEL-HEADED LATE MODEL FEATURE. The always late never early #5 of Ronnie Johnson pulled his familiar black/red #5 to the rear of the field. Polesitters #B5 Todd Hernandez and #29 Jason Welshan would bring the full field to the green. Welshan would take the early lead and look to be on his way to improving on his second place finish from last week when everything went up in smoke on lap 7. He pulled his #29 to the front stretch with steam coming out from every end. Later to learn he had broken the water pump completely off. But the crowd was getting excited as that late entry of Ronnie Johnson was now up to sixth place with 19 laps remaining. But just as the bad luck had hit #29 Jason Welshan it also hit Mr. Johnson. On the very next retart the #5 slowed only to find his drive-shaft laying behind him ending his night. The lead was now taken by the #00 of Jeff Smith followed closely by the #52 of Scott Sexton. Smith was battling from the bottom while Sexton used the top. Sexton motored around Smith of lap 15 and never looked back. He was followed across the finish line by Smith the #32 of Lamar Scoggins ( who was DQ'D for being light at the scales) and #B5 Todd Hernandez, #07 Jason Cardwell and #16 Rick Hixson rounded out the top five.

The last race of the evening was the Front-Runners with H31 of Micheal Arp leaving everyone else in his dust. He was followeds to the line by #X20 Brad Cross and K88 Derrick Forgey. Full racing program completed by 10:25.

Taking the lead from Robby Mason on lap 12, the two-time Southern All-Star series champion led the remaining 8 laps but it was a SCATTER-BOMB for the remaining top 5 finishers as pole starter Jerry Coffman held back a hard chargin' 2009 division champion James Gamble. S.A.S. "CABIN FEVER" THIS FRIDAY NIGHT MARCH 19th

Chattanooga, TN (2/17/2010) - It's been 25 seasons since the Southern All-Stars Dirt Racing Series has raced at Boyd’s Speedway, and this Friday night (MARCH 19TH) the Best of the Best will be in competition. In 1984, B.J. Parker brought two events to the track, formerly known as Tennessee-Georgia Speedway.
Both events were won by Mississippi racing legend and Hall of Famer Jerry Inmon. Taking victories in Columbus, MS and Talladega, AL, Inmon would also go on to win the 1984 Southern All Stars Championship. That would be the last time the series would sanction an event in Chattanooga.

Instead for many years, race fans and competitors traveled up Interstate-75 to the Cleveland, TN Speedway for S.A.S. races. In 2010 that will change... Boyd’s and Cleveland are each slated to host back to back events in March and July giving racers two chances to take home a big race payday. Friday March 19th, Boyd’s Speedway will host a $4,000 to-win S.A.S. (40 lap) event prior to the annual SHAMROCK 60 race at Cleveland, while July 16th will see an identical paying event slated infront of the Jean Johnson Memorial race at Cleveland Speedway on July 17th.

In addition to the $4,000 to win Southern All Stars Late Model event, Boyd’s Speedway will offer racing in Steel Head Late Models, A&B Hobby and Front Wheel Drive Divisions. For more information on Boyd’s Speedway visit their website at: www.BoydsSpeedway.com
